The GEAR UP Coordinator is responsible for the College’s GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) program in Transylvania County. The GEAR UP Coordinator position is a part-time, grant-funded position. Programmatic, evaluation, and counseling responsibilities are essential to the success of this position in fulfilling the academic obligations communicated in the approved grant award.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
PLANNING & PARTNERSHIPBuild and/or maintain strategic, positive, effective partnerships with higher education staff, administrators, and faculty in order to ensure support for GEAR UP initiatives in partnering LEA (school districts).Collaborate with staff of partnering GEAR UP LEA (school & district leadership, faculty, and administrators) to identify opportunities to foster higher education access and readiness among their students and supporting higher education-going culture within their schools.Partner directly with designated GEAR UP LEA Coordinator to ensure programming for and support to GEAR UP students is comprehensive, coordinated, data-informed, and non-duplicativeSupport the strategic development of a seven (7)-year plan to leverage GEAR UP to foster higher education access and success in your service region.Participate in regular, on-going professional development opportunities to stay abreast of updates and the changing landscape of higher education access.Maintain a strong relationship with Appalachian State University GEAR UP by regularly attending meetings and communicating updates to higher education staff.SERVICE IMPLEMENTATIONCollaborate with higher education faculty/staff and partner LEA(s) staff to implementGEAR UP programming thatcan be embedded in the institution’s operations and culture;model best practices in the education and/or organizational development; andcan be sustained beyond the life of the grant.Ensure GEAR UP students and family services focus on the postsecondary planning and preparation for all students, with special emphasis on those students from populations who are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education.Support the development of academic/STEM services that demonstrate alignment between higher education and grant goals.Plan, develop, and implement the following services consistent across all higher education partners: ? Summer Enrichment Opportunities for partnering LEA(s) GEAR UP students onthe higher education campus.? Campus Visits from partnering LEA(s) to the higher education campus.? Career Exploration and Readiness activities to partnering LEA(s) GEAR UPstudents.? Higher Education Readiness and Transition services to GEAR UP students whenapplicable.Develop supplemental activities beyond the consistent services to ensure grant funds are providing students with the skills, knowledge, and access to reach their postsecondary goals.EVALUATIONPartner with GEAR UP LEA Coordinators to ensure all services are entered into theGEAR UP database within 30 days of the service and in accordance with federal andAppalachian GEAR UP policies.Engage in regular data review in collaboration with the higher education GEAR UPDirector and LEA GEAR UP teams to monitor progress toward GEAR UP goals, identify gaps, and promote the implementation of data-informed, research-based services to strategically address those gaps.Provide regular data updates to higher education staff to keep them informed and engage in discussion regarding strategic alignment of GEAR UP goals with institutional goals.COMPLIANCEMaintain adequate service and financial records in accordance with federal, state, institutional, and GEAR UP policies.Partner closely with higher education Finance and/or Grants compliance office to ensure allowability of expenditures related to grant goalsWork with higher education finance staff to ensure quarterly reports and match submissions are submitted on time and with minimal error.Monitor progress toward cost-share commitments and budget spending.Communicate regularly with higher education GEAR UP Director regarding financial commitments to ensure match commitments are met and GEAR UP funding is utilized appropriately.
