What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wilderness Therapy Field Instructor position at Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness?
Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness (BRTW) is seeking passionate and dedicated Field Instructors to join our team! Since 2002, we have helped teens (12-17), young adults (18-30), and their families navigate challenges and grow through immersive wilderness therapy. Our evidence-based approach, combined with the healing power of nature, fosters self-awareness, resilience, and lasting change.
Located in the North Georgia and Western North Carolina mountains, BRTW operates a fully nomadic wilderness model, where students live outdoors 24/7 alongside supportive field staff. Field Instructors play a vital role in ensuring student safety, facilitating group discussions, leading outdoor activities, and teaching essential wilderness skills.
Instructors work an 8-day-on, 6-day-off schedule, leading small groups of 4 to 12 students with a team of 3 to 5 instructors. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about the outdoors, mentorship, and making a meaningful impact. Field Instructors must be adaptable, strong communicators, and committed to supporting students through transformative experiences.
Training & Development
New Field Instructors participate in an experiential training before hire and receive ongoing mentorship from therapists and senior staff. We also provide bi-weekly education on clinical and risk management topics, as well as opportunities to earn a Wilderness First Responder certification for long-term team members.
Compensation & Benefits
- $150-$200 per day (based on experience)

Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (higher education preferred)
- 21 years old (required by state regulations)
- First Aid and CPR/AED certifications (must be completed within 90 days of hire)
- Ability to carry 50 pounds over various terrain
- Experience working with teens, young adults, mental health, or outdoor guiding preferred
Location
BRTW’s headquarters is in Clayton, GA, with staff typically living in Western NC, North GA, Western SC, or Eastern TN. Staff are responsible for their own housing when off shift.
