Position Summary
The Senior Payroll Specialist assists in the preparation, processing, and review of the bi‐weekly payroll cycle for the Company’s veterinary hospitals. This position works closely with our Payroll Manager to ensure all payroll cycles are processed efficiently and also assists in oversight of our payroll tax accounts. The Senior Payroll Specialist provides payroll-related advice, guidance and support to the organization and payroll team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in processing of bi‐weekly payroll and associated post payroll reporting
- Oversees team projects, training, and continued improvement of Payroll Specialists and Coordinators
- Reconcile payroll journal entries and verify transactions in the general ledger. Analyze account balances, investigate unusual fluctuations, and resolve discrepancies accurately and on time.
- Supports internal teams to ensure seamless onboarding of new business acquisitions.
- Assists with the administration of all veterinarian compensation and benefits details in the HRIS.
- Manage the team’s inbox, ensuring inquiries are addressed promptly and efficiently. Assist teammates with complex payroll issues.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
- Maintains professional knowledge of payroll legislative changes
- Partner with Payroll Vendor Tax Team to ensure proper set up of new tax locations within the payroll system
- Research and document tax notices/issues alongside Payroll Manager and Payroll Vendor Tax Team
- Ensure tax notices are uploaded and resolved by Payroll Tax Team in a timely fashion
- Partner with Payroll Manager to maintain documentation of tax account numbers and credentials
- Other duties and projects as assigned
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or Associates degree with requisite experience preferred
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of experience with multi‐entity payroll processing and extensive knowledge of standard payroll processes and procedures
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent customer service skills
- Expert Microsoft Excel skills required
- Ability to be flexible and agile and meet deadlines with little supervision
- Strong time management, detail orientation, and organizational skills are essential
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time
- Occasionally moves about inside the office to access file cabinets, supplies, and office machinery.
- Frequently communicates with managers at remote locations using email and phone. Must be able to exchange clear, accurate information in these situations.
- Frequent keyboarding/use of computer for data entry
- Occasionally moves equipment and supplies weighing up to 15 pounds
- Frequently communicates and collaborates with co-workers and our hospitals remotely, communicates with our hospitals both verbally and via email/in writing. Must be able to exchange clear, accurate information in a professional manner.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range: $70,000-$72,000 per year
Blue River PetCare team members are eligible to participate in the discretionary annual bonus program.
