A Plumbing Apprentice is an entry-level position in the plumbing industry. This role is focused on learning and gaining practical experience in plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair. Plumbing apprentices work under the supervision and guidance of experienced plumbers or master plumbers. This position provides a valuable foundation for a career in plumbing and offers opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become a certified plumber.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Assisting in Plumbing Installations:
- Assist in the installation of plumbing systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, including pipes, fixtures, and fittings.
- Help with the assembly and installation of water supply, drainage, and heating systems based on blueprints and specifications.
Learning Plumbing Safety:
- Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
- Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
Material Handling:
- Assist in handling, organizing, and maintaining an inventory of plumbing materials, tools, and equipment.
- Transport materials to job sites as needed.
- Troubleshooting and Repairs:
- Observe and learn how to diagnose and troubleshoot plumbing issues, such as leaks, blockages, and malfunctions.
- Assist in making basic repairs and adjustments under supervision.
- Pipe and Fixture Work:
- Help with cutting, bending, and threading pipes.
- Assist in installing and connecting plumbing fixtures, including sinks, toilets, faucets, and water heaters.
Tools and Equipment:
- Familiarize yourself with and safely operate various plumbing tools and equipment, such as wrenches, pipe cutters, and pipe threading machines.
Code Compliance:
- Learn and adhere to local and national plumbing codes and regulations.
- Ensure work is completed in compliance with relevant standards.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and job site conditions.
- Assist in documenting plumbing plans and diagrams.
- Learning and Development:
- Participate in formal plumbing apprenticeship programs, classes, and workshops.
- Seek opportunities for on-the-job learning and skill development.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA):
- Successful apprentice plumbers will be well-organized and detail oriented.
- You should have good customer service skills.
- Be able and willing to follow instructions.
- Be prepared to travel to clients' homes to complete your work.
- Minimum qualifications include, and are not limited to, the following:
- Must during the time you are employed as an apprentice show a dedication to a career based on the areas of repair, service and replacement of plumbing and piping systems, boilers, fixtures, etc., and remain focused on developing these skills towards certification as a Journeyman by constantly studying or taking applicable classes.
- Must have strong paperwork skills and can fill out all business-related information such as timecards, service work order invoices, iPad etc.
- Must understand English in a competent manner to clearly communicate to those they report to and to clients and other tradesmen.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable MVR record.
- Must work with managers and supervisors to develop a plan for owning the basic selection of hand tools and a torch, while most larger power tools are provided by the company. Tool purchase assistance is available.
Education/Certification Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED certificate or evidence of equivalent experience in a construction-oriented business.
- Enrollment in an accredited plumbing apprenticeship program is preferred.
- May substitute equivalent experience on a year-to-year basis for educational requirements.
Qualifications:
- Ability to pass drug screening.
- Ability to pass background check.
- Strong interest in the plumbing field and a desire to become a certified plumber.
- Good mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Basic math and measurement skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work well as part of a team.
- Physical fitness and the ability to work in various conditions, including tight spaces and at heights.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and plumbing industry best practices.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

- Essential physical demands include and are not limited to the following:
- Must be able to safely lift, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, push/pull, walk and stand for continual and extended periods of time.
- Must be able to safely lift 50 – 100 lbs. and over 100 lbs. on an occasional basis.
- Must be able to safely lift 50 lbs. or less on a frequent basis.
- Must be able to balance and safely use ladders on a frequent basis.
- Must be able to safely work at heights, overhead or in confined
- Must be able to work in both cold and hot conditions.

Hours/Shift:
- M-F (Overtime Opportunities)
- On call weekend rotation every 6 weeks
Salary Range: $18.00/h-$25.00/h
