P.L.A.Y. is a Head Start center within Blue Valley Community Action Partnership, located in York, NE. We are looking for an energetic, nurturing person who desires to contribute to an excellent environment of education, health and well-being, while helping to support children and their families achieve success in school and in life.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Cook is responsible for the complete food services preparation at the Head Start center. This includes the preparation of meals based on created menus (according to the CACFP Meal Pattern Guidelines for children birth to five years old), clean up, record keeping, and maintenance of safe and sanitary food practices.
- Plan for and prepare foods in accordance with USDA and Head Start standards using menus provided by the Nutrition Coordinator.
- Purchase sufficient groceries and supplies to prepare planned menus for the number of enrolled children.
- Plan far enough ahead to minimize the need for food substitutions; when substitutions are necessary, obtain approval for all modifications and substitutions; document as required.
- Follow modified menus and recipes developed by the Nutrition Coordinator to meet the medical and/or feeding needs of children with disabilities or food allergies.
- Deliver foods from the kitchen to the dining area ready to be served, maintaining appropriate temperatures.
- Assist classroom staff to provide developmentally appropriate nutrition experiences for children in the classroom.
- Communicate effectively and professionally.
- Ensure the operation and maintenance of a safe, clean, healthy and productive work environment.
- Maintain professional competence through professional growth and development opportunities.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in a timely manner.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Proof of high school diploma or GED
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and access to insured motorized vehicle.
- Submit to all required pre-employment background checks, with no disqualifying findings.
- Obtain CPR and First Aid Certification and recertify as needed.
- General computer skills, computer literacy, and familiarity with various applications such as database, word processing, e-mail and internet, and the ability to learn agency-specific software.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Preference will be given to persons with a minimum of 6 months experience in cooking.
Knowledge of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Ability to apply Early Childhood Development theory in daily activities, and adapt to the individual needs of children.
