Blue Water is a privately held family owned by father and son Jack and Todd Burbage.
INTRODUCTION TO ROLE
The Boat Captain at OBX is responsible for the safety and well-being of both the crew and passengers and the vessel's safe and efficient operation and management. The Captain is the ultimate authority, always commanding respect and attention from all crew and passengers. The vessel's capacity holds 22 (captain, mate, and 20 guests). Blue Water Hospitality manages OBX.
This is a Seasonal position (Spring / Summer)
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Administrative Responsibilities:

The Boat Captain’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations regarding the USCG.
- Hiring and managing crew, sailing and maintenance crew, and apprentices.
- Bookkeeping of vessel accounts (boat books) and maintenance of budget.
- Planning and implementing maintenance work. Research and purchase of all maintenance supplies.
- Working with other Clearwater departments
- Maintaining a close relationship with the Sail Coordinator/Program Manager and Education Department
- Communicating with the Inspiration Department regarding grants, festivals, and special events
- Maintaining a positive relationship between the boat, office, and board.
Boat Responsibilities:

The captain’s responsibilities at OBX include but are not limited to:
- Safe operation of the vessel.
- Decision-making in all aspects of operation, including sunset tours, fishing, shuttle services to the beach, restaurant, and other local attractions, and cancellation and postponement of services and sails.
- Training crew in all aspects of vessel operations, including safety, program, public relations, and community.
- Managing the crew to create a strong, cohesive team.
- Working with Property leadership and corporate training to maintain a positive community on the boat for all crew, interns, and passengers.
- Working to maintain positive relationships among Marina crew and other vessels.
- Prompt written and verbal incident reports to the Executive Director.
- Vessel maintenance and cleanliness.
- Maintain clear communication with the onboard educators and the Education Director to ensure the highest quality of education program.
- Hiring boat mate(s).
QUALIFICATIONS
- 25/50 or 100-Ton Master Captains license
- 3–5 years' experience as a Boat Captain or sailing of a similar size vessel
- An understanding of our property, mission, and services.

The hospitality environment is fast-paced, and you may be required to cover or assist with tasks/job functions outside of the job you were hired for. We require each of our team members to have an All-Hands-On-Deck mindset. You may be tasked with other functions and are expected to complete those tasks with the same enthusiasm and dedication as expected with your normal job duties.
The Boat Captain has both administrative and boat responsibilities. These areas of responsibility overlap and are not confined to the locality of the office or the boat.
