The CMA at Bluegrass Community Health Center (BCHC) serves all people with care and respect. Our CMA's perform competent and compassionate care to patients under the direction and supervision of licensed medical personnel. This position also takes on a variety of duties including assisting with continuously improving documented processes and completing other administrative duties to ensure successful operation of the clinic. The excellent service BCHC staff provides helps patients choose BCHC as their health home.
The CMA will:
Provide excellent customer service to patients, families, and guests:
- Interact with patients and others in a respectful and culturally competent manner.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient personal, financial, and health records.
- Ensure patients are identified with two forms of identification (i.e. name, DOB) at each visit and before all procedures.
- Answer phones calls/respond to messages per policy.
- Communicate with patients, families, and guests in a professional and courteous manner.
- Assess for and report potential environmental and patient safety risks i.e. broken furniture and equipment).
- Attend Outreach Events or Health Fairs as scheduled by Supervisor.
- Attend assigned staff meetings, clinic committee meetings and training as requested by Supervisor.
Provide quality patient care according to Patient Centered Medical Home principles:
- Assume assigned role within the PCMH team.
- Acts as preceptor and train new staff as clinical assistants. Acts as mentor to new staff and other staff who require encouragement or instruction related to clinic policies.
- Will demonstrate expertise in HIPAA laws and is able to direct other staff with appropriate contact with phone calls and other who may enter clinic.
- Will demonstrate expertise in CLIA Waived labs, controls and documentation.
- Must excel in time management, reliability and responsible use of time off. Demonstrates active participation in team huddles and promotes PCMH principles as a role model to other clinical assistants
- Participate in pre-visit planning and post-visit follow-up care.
- Participate in effective clinic flow.
- Monitor interruptions in flow and communicate delays to patients.
- Utilize interpreters/interpreting line as indicated to ensure effective communication.
- If bilingual, serve as an interpreter as requested.
- Keep patient care rooms and patient bathrooms cleaned and well stocked.
- Keep lab and phlebotomy room clean and well stocked.
- Perform and documents quality control checks on lab tests and equipment.
- Ensure lab orders are processed correctly and per policy.
- Sterilize instruments as indicated.
- Change needled boxes as needed and store for pick-up.
- Collect initial patient health data (i.e. vital signs, heights, weights) and room patient.
- Perform standing orders established for clinical assistants.
- Follow orders given by licensed medical personnel that are consistent with team role and competency level (i.e. CLIA-waived tests, phlebotomy, set up for/assist with procedures, finger stick for labs and injections with appropriate training or certification)
- Provide established standardized education as appropriate.
- Report and document any concern or adverse reaction to medication/intervention to licensed medical personnel.
- Review visit summary/take home instructions/return for follow-up with patients; provide clarification/education as appropriate.
- Escort patient to check-out at end of visit.
