WASTE WATER TREATMENT OPERATOR

A "wastewater treatment operator" is responsible for monitoring and operating wastewater treatment plant equipment, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and maintaining a safe working environment by implementing and upholding health and safety protocols within the facility; their duties include collecting samples, adjusting chemical levels, performing routine maintenance, identifying potential hazards, and documenting operational data to guarantee proper wastewater treatment while prioritizing worker safety and environmental protection.

Key responsibilities may include:

• Wastewater Treatment Operations:
  • Monitoring treatment process parameters like flow rates, pH levels, and chemical concentrations.
  • Operating and adjusting equipment such as pumps, valves, and filters to maintain optimal treatment efficiency.
  • Collecting and analyzing wastewater samples to ensure compliance with discharge permits.
  • Adding chemicals like chlorine or coagulants as required to disinfect and purify wastewater.
• Environmental Compliance:
  • Maintaining accurate records of treatment data and operational logs to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Reporting any non-compliance issues to relevant authorities promptly.
  • Staying updated on environmental regulations and best practices for wastewater treatment.
• Health and Safety:
  • Identifying and mitigating potential safety hazards within the plant, including chemical exposure, confined spaces, and mechanical hazards.
  • Implementing and enforcing safety procedures like personal protective equipment (PPE) usage and emergency response protocols.
  • Conducting safety training for plant personnel.
  • Investigating and reporting workplace accidents and near misses
• Maintenance and Repair:
  • Performing routine maintenance on treatment equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
  • Identifying and reporting equipment malfunctions to maintenance personnel.
  • Assisting with major equipment repairs and upgrades

Required skills and qualifications:

• Technical knowledge: Understanding of wastewater treatment processes, chemistry, and relevant environmental regulations.
• Operational skills: Ability to operate and monitor complex equipment, including computer-based control systems.
• Analytical skills: Calculation and Interpreting data from water quality tests and making adjustments to treatment processes accordingly.
• Safety awareness: Strong commitment to safety protocols and hazard identification.
• Experience: 0-3 years experience.
• Documentation skills: Maintaining accurate records and reports.

Relevant certifications:

• Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification (depending on jurisdiction)
• Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) certification (may be beneficial)
