The American Automobile Experience, located in Kearney, Nebraska, is a non-profit museum dedicated to showcasing the evolution and impact of automobiles on history, culture, industry, and innovation. The museum houses a diverse collection of over 150 vintage and classic cars, spanning from the early 1900s to modern times. In addition to the vehicles, visitors can explore a vintage service station, a recreated drive-in movie theater, and several kiddie rides.

The museum is currently seeking a full-time Museum Manager to oversee daily operations, coordinate exhibitions, manage staff, and ensure an engaging experience for visitors of all ages. This role is ideal for someone passionate about automobiles, history, and community engagement, offering a chance to contribute to a dynamic and growing organization.

Reports To: Executive Director / Board of Directors

Job Type: Full-Time (30 hours per week, typically aligned with the museum's hours of operation, including weekends and some weekdays. Some events may occur after closing hours.)

Museum Hours of Operation:

  • Monday & Tuesday: Closed
  • Wednesday – Sunday: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM (Regular Hours)
  • Summer Hours:
    • Wednesday & Thursday: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
    • Friday & Saturday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
    • Sunday: 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operations Management:
    • Oversee daily museum operations, including facility management, exhibits, and visitor services.
    • Ensure museum operations align with the mission, vision, and budgetary constraints.
    • Manage (and recruit as needed) a full volunteer staff, ensuring a positive and efficient work environment.
    • Maintain the safety and preservation of the vehicle collection and exhibits.
  • Exhibit and Collection Management:
    • Curate and maintain vehicle exhibits, ensuring proper display and preservation.
    • Collaborate with donors and experts to acquire and research vehicles and memorabilia.
    • Develop rotating exhibits and special events to engage visitors.
    • Use the manager’s in-building presence during open hours to capture and promote positive PR, such as visitor testimonials and notable events via social media.
  • Education and Community Engagement:
    • Develop educational programs for diverse audiences, including school groups, families, and car enthusiasts.
    • Organize and oversee events such as car shows, lectures, and workshops to enhance community engagement.
    • Build and maintain relationships with local schools, automotive clubs, and community organizations.
  • Marketing and Outreach:
    • Lead marketing efforts, including social media management, public relations, and promotional materials.
    • Create posts and promotional content that capture interesting museum moments (e.g., notable visitors, interesting exhibits, or events).
    • Collaborate with local media outlets for publicity and press coverage.
  • Fundraising and Development:
    • Assist in the development of fundraising strategies, including membership programs and grant applications.
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and community stakeholders.
    • Organize fundraising events and collaborate on financial reporting to ensure transparency and progress toward funding goals.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain accurate records of inventory, financial transactions, visitor statistics, and other administrative needs.
    • Prepare regular reports for the Board of Directors and participate in meetings as needed.
    • Oversee membership programs, the gift shop, and museum sales.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in business or similar or work experience. Candidates with a genuine passion for cars and/or automotive history are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Experience: Non-profit management, with experience in operations, fundraising, community engagement, or event management preferred, but not required, relevant experience will be considered.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership, team management, and communication skills.
    • Proficiency in social media platforms, marketing, and public relations.
    • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, including budgeting, financial reporting, and donor relations.
    • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and foster a collaborative environment.
  • Passion: A genuine interest in automotive history, preservation, and community outreach is essential. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with volunteers, staff, and the public are crucial. A candidate with the right personality, passion for cars, and ability to connect with people is highly valued.

The full pay package will be discussed with potential candidates.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasional evening work for special events.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or move around for extended periods during museum hours.
