Position Overview:
The primary responsibility of the Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is to administer oral and topical medications, excluding hypodermic injections, and provide direct resident nursing care under the direction and supervision of the Charge Nurse or Neighborhood Nurse. The CMA will function as a member of a team and assists in delivering resident care as outlined in residents Plan of Care.
Essential Job Functions:
- Administer medications and simple treatments as ordered by the resident’s physician in accordance with Policy and Procedure.
- Set up and administer oral PRN medications ordered by the physician; psychotropic prn’s are only given after checking with Charge Nurse.
- Clean medication trays and treatment cart, and room at the end of each shift.
- Chart all medications and treatments given in the resident’s electronic Medication Administration Record immediately after administration.
- Record and check in non-controlled medications received from the pharmacy. Controlled medications (schedule II, III, IV medications) require two licensed nurses to check/sign in.
- Report any medication errors to the Charge Nurse immediately.
- Insure adequate stocked supplies for medication and treatment administration for oncoming shift.
- Inform Charge Nurse of any problems/unusual happenings needing physician notification.
- Assist in implementing resident Plan of Care.
- As time allows following medication and treatment administration and taking of vital signs, assume responsibility for functions described in the plan of care.
- Assist residents to and from activities and hairdresser.
- Assist with other tasks, such as QA monitors as assigned by Charge Nurse.
- Participate in shift change reports.
- Attend Plan of Care meetings when appropriate.
- Initiate activities with residents in groups or one-on-one.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age or older.
- Must be Certified Medication Aide in Kansas.
Physical Requirements:
Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
