Director of Patient and Resident Access
The Director of Patient Access oversees all patient access functions at Blythedale Children’s Hospital, including insurance verification and service authorizations, patient/resident registration, scheduling, and overall system development. Responsibilities include improving workflows, promoting operational efficiency, building relationships with colleagues at referring hospitals, and enhancing the overall admission experience for patients and families while ensuring an efficient and effective revenue cycle
Essential Job Functions
- Provide vision, leadership, and operational oversight for on-site Patient Access staff, directing admitting and registration teams across inpatient, long-term care, and outpatient services. Establish positive, collaborative relationships with operational leaders and staff involved in the admissions process.
- Organize departmental functions, establish clear accountabilities, and delegate duties necessary for efficient revenue cycle billing.
- Develop processes and training for staff on admission procedures using existing systems (Meditech Expanse) and
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of Medicaid and commercial insurance requirements for authorization and service provision
- Network and collaborate with counterparts at referring organizations to resolve shared admission and insurance-related patient and/or resident issues.
- Work directly with patients, residents, families, and/or legal representatives [SG1] to improve their admission experience and provide expertise in navigating insurance requirements. Develop and maintain an effective, visible, and well-respected team by assessing, coaching, and managing the performance of current staff while assessing prospective candidates for open positions based on qualifications and people skills.
- Promotion of team-building in all areas of responsibility
Job Competencies
- Knowledge of hospital admissions processes, insurance verification and authorization, and electronic system development and training (Meditech, Phreesia, etc.).
- Proven track record in the system and project implementation with Meditech or similar electronic health record (EHR).
- Capable of implementing and communicating processes and changes while supporting the day-to-day needs of departmental functions.
- Inspire and sustain team unity and engagement by developing, motivating, and guiding the team to achieve results together through productive relationships and work.
- Promotes team-building relationships in all areas of responsibility. Works in a collaborative manner with all managers/team leaders to ensure a successful and compliant revenue cycle process. Develop relationships with other departments involved in revenue cycle, primarily in patient accounting & billing.
- Has in depth understanding of the relationship between patient access functions and billing functions in support of the revenue cycle.
Other Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- 3 years in a managerial role, and 5 plus years working in an area related to patient access in a hospital setting.
- Knowledge of New York State Medicaid, scheduling systems, and insurance verification and authorization processes.
- Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills required.
- Proficiency in the use of front-end admitting authorization and verification systems (Meditech Expanse preferred).

- College degree; master's level degree in business, finance, or healthcare management,
