What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outside Sales Rep position at BMD?
Essential Functions
- Sell BMD forest products and services to lumber yards and building materials dealers. Meet or exceed gross margin sales goals.
- Become an expert on the features, benefits, and application of all BMD forest products, with an emphasis on engineered wood products' structural design properties.
- Schedule and conduct face-to-face sales presentations, product-knowledge training sessions, and business reviews with lumber yard salespeople and managers.
- Schedule and conduct face-to-face meetings with architects, engineers, builders and / or framers to persuade them to specify BMD forest products.
- Proactively plan a weekly schedule that maximizes facetime with key decision makers and influencers and minimizes drivetime.
- Develop programs that encourage dealers to make BMD their primary supplier.
- Respond quickly and competently to product or service issues and develop win-win solutions.
- Constantly collect market intelligence regarding supply, demand, and competing products and utilize this information to win business and optimize BMD's profitability.
- Identify new products and services that BMD can offer customers.
- Collaborate with BMD's suppliers to solve customers' problems, win large projects and programs, and order custom products.
- Provide demand outlooks to BMD's buyers to help guide purchasing decisions and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Regularly exchange customer intelligence with BMD's building products sales team to identify potential sales opportunities.
- Communicate frequently with BMD's inside sales and operations teams regarding order status, delivery scheduling, product returns, and other customer needs.
- Utilize CRM to track large project and program opportunities and maintain an updated contact database.
- Represent BMD at customer events and industry associations.
- Perform additional duties as required and requested.
Qualifications
Education and Work Experience :
Licensing / Certification : Maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
Travel : Daily travel using personal vehicle for work. Must have dependable car or truck in safe operating condition, capable of transporting samples, displays and other bulky items. Limited overnight travel may be required. Vehicle allowance and gas reimbursement provided.
Technology / Computer Skills : Proficient in Microsoft Windows : Outlook, SharePoint, basic Word and Excel, internet usage; mobile devices. Familiar with Enterprise Resource Planning and Salesforce.
Language / Interpersonal Relationships Skills : Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent customer service, sales (influence, persuasion, and negotiation skills), and active listening skills; proficient at reading and interpreting business articles, documents, and reports, and other documents using professional business grammar; communicates clearly, professionally, and confidently with others.
Mathematical Skills : Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals in all units of measure, compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
Reasoning Ability : Uses common sense and strong analytical skills to fulfill job requirements and carry out instructions, evaluate information and protect the Company from liability; capable of applying problem solving techniques and dealing with problems involving several variables; attentive to accuracy and detail; ethical.

Physical Demands : Light demands - exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, 10lbs frequently. Frequently standing, walking, stooping, reaching, grasping, sitting, pushing, pulling, driving, talking, typing and writing.
Work Environment : Works out of an office and may work in the field. Fieldwork conditions will be varied. Generally, work in an environment with generally moderate noise level devoid of hazardous or unusual working conditions. May travel to a job site where enhanced safety awareness and PPE is required.
Degree of Supervision : General Supervision : Normally requires little instruction or supervision on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments.
