Director of Engineering
BMZ USA, Inc. develops and produces high-tech lithium-ion battery systems and is looking for an Mechanical Engineer to join our team.
BMZ USA is one of the four development and manufacturing sites of BMZ Group that employs almost 2,000 people worldwide.
In the last 5 years, we have made significant progress in transitioning BMZ USA from a sales office into a development and manufacturing company. But we have just started: New customers and double digit growth are what we have seen and what we are positioned for.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Engineering at BMZ USA is the leader of a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for the design, development, and delivery of advanced lithium-ion battery systems. This role is critical to driving innovation, ensuring product quality, and aligning engineering efforts with strategic business goals. The Director will oversee mechanical, electrical, software, test systems, and validation engineering functions, fostering collaboration across departments to ensure efficient product development cycles and robust technical solutions. As a key member of the leadership team, the Director of Engineering will champion engineering excellence, mentor technical leaders, and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and cross-functional integration.
JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Lead and develop the overall engineering vision, strategy, and roadmap for BMZ USA's lithium-ion battery systems, ensuring alignment with business objectives and future market needs.
  • Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineera across mechanical, electrical, embedded software, test systems, and validation disciplines.
  • Drive organizational structure, resource planning, and capability development to support current programs and future growth.
  • Set technical direction and oversee the execution of product development lifecycles—from concept through production—ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery of high-quality solutions.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration between engineering, operations, quality, and business development teams to ensure seamless integration of engineering outputs into manufacturing and customer-facing solutions.
  • Champion a culture of technical excellence, innovation, continuous improvement, and accountability across the engineering organization.
  • Guide the implementation and continuous improvement of development processes and methodologies, including APQP, DFMEA, DVP&R, design reviews, and validation protocols.
  • Evaluate and oversee strategic technology partnerships, external development resources, and vendor relationships to complement internal capabilities.
  • Track and report key engineering KPIs, program health metrics, and team performance
  • Ensure engineering compliance with relevant safety, quality, and regulatory standards in collaboration with quality and compliance teams.
  • Maintain awareness of customer feedback, market trends, and emerging technologies to inform product strategy and identify opportunities for differentiation.
  • Cultivate a global mindset and collaborate effectively with BMZ Group engineering teams across international sites.
  • Support business development and strategic planning efforts by contributing technical insights during customer engagements, proposals, and new program evaluations.
  • Perform other executive-level responsibilities as needed to support company objectives.
MINIMUM ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Master’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Systems, or related discipline).
  • 10 years of progressive engineering experience, including 5 years in engineering leadership or management roles, preferably in product development environments involving cross-functional teams.
  • Proven technical leadership in the development and commercialization of complex electromechanical systems — ideally in lithium-ion battery-powered products for industrial, commercial, or consumer applications.
  • Experience overseeing multidisciplinary engineering organizations, including mechanical design, embedded systems/software, electronics, testing, and validation.
  • Strong background in high-volume product design and manufacturing, with a deep understanding of DFM/DFA, VAVE (Value Analysis/Value Engineering), and design transfer to manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with battery management systems (BMS), power electronics, and connected/IoT device integration.
  • Demonstrated success managing engineering functions across global teams, suppliers, and contract manufacturing partners.
  • Working knowledge of product development quality frameworks such as APQP, DFMEA, PPAP, and validation planning (DVP&R).
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and strategic planning skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and executive leadership.
ADDITIONAL VALUED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Strong understanding of digital and analog circuitry.
  • Strong understanding of injection molded plastics
  • Strong understanding of RTOS-based firmware
  • Experience in regulatory certification processes specific to batteries (UN38.3, IEC62133, UL2271/UL2580)
  • Experience with design for functional safety (IEC61508, ISO26262)
  • Strong quantitative, design, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the individual filling this role will frequently and may, for extended periods of time, perform code reviews, design reviews, schedule reviews, and general desktop functions. Vision abilities required. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
Working hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST., Monday through Friday. The noise levels in areas of the manufacturing facility frequently may exceed the normal dBA. Work conditions may include elevated noise levels requiring hearing protection. While performing the duties of this job, the employee could be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock. In such cases, the employee will be required to wear PPE such as safety glasses and hearing protection, as well as more specific protection such as a proper grounding apparatus, to demonstrably reduce the personal hazard.
