- 1 year of experience $65,500-$85,000
- 3 years of experience $73,900-$92,500
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is a training and educational position designed for later advancement, or claim representative position depending on experience.
Claims Specialist: Successful candidate will receive training and working assignments from various individuals and resources aimed at obtaining formal certification.
Claim Representative: Fully investigates and settles, under direction of Manager Claims, all claims and lawsuits involving the company, arising out of personal injuries or property damage, excluding bill of lading claims.
- Implement processes and procedures under direction of Manager Claims and Director Claims.
- Cooperates and coordinates duties with claims personnel on adjacent territories.
- Performs thorough and ethical investigations and resolves exposures in a fair, honest and responsible manner.
- Assists attorneys/paralegals in preparation and trial of lawsuits.
- Evaluates and effects settlements of claims and lawsuits within proper authority.
- Works closely with all BNSF departments to perform incident investigations/analyses and promote the General Claims Department's Vision Statement with such other internal departments.
- Observes and reviews potential liabilities on company property with respective non-claims field personnel.
- External Contacts: Local counsel, state, county, city, and law enforcement officials, physicians, medical specialists, and expert consulting witnesses in specialized fields.
- Extensive, but irregular, travel (averages over 30%). Investigations conducted in all types of weather conditions. Irregular hours of work.
- Frequent evening, night and weekend work (including holidays). On call 24-hours a day.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Prefer a basic knowledge of all phases of railroad operation, some understanding of traumatic medicine, tort law, and a basic knowledge of the Federal Employer's Liability Act, crossing accident laws and of investigative principles.
Minimum of 1 year of experience in a related field (railroad claims, insurance, legal, investigative work) required.
College graduate (FOUR YEAR DEGREE MANDATORY).
Personal skills: ability to communicate with individuals in every social, educational and economic level; an imaginative and inquisitive mind; ability to gather, weigh and analyze information; decision making capabilities; skill in photography, typing, and basic computer applications. Willingness to learn. Must be a self-starter and independent worker.
Candidates will be subject to a background review which may include, but not necessarily be limited to, all prior employers, personnel records, educational institutions, government agencies, companies, credit reporting agencies and financial history, and law enforcement agencies at the federal, state or county level.
The successful candidate will have access to personal and confidential information, and will eventually be expected to work with company draft books and have access to other financial tools, such as a corporate credit card.
