Overview:
The Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for leadership of the Corporate Microbiology Laboratory, including scheduling and supervising the activities of laboratory personnel and ensuring adherence to processes that conform to safety and quality requirements. The Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor has the technical capacity to perform all testing in the laboratory. The Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor must not only have knowledge of current microbiological techniques (AOAC, ISO, Federal Government Standards, SQF, etc.) but must also provide expertise in interpreting the results of such analyses.
Job Description:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for oversight of all activities in the Microbiology Laboratory, training, and development of the staff. Provide motivation to lab personnel, drive teamwork, have the ability to work independently when needed, and have an overall desire for success.
- Institute and oversee laboratory processes and workflows to ensure that sample analyses, shelf life studies, and challenge studies are completed and reported in a timely and accurate manner. Reports must be reviewed for accuracy before issuance to prevent erroneous results from circulating.
- Develop, review, and revise procedures and laboratory processes, as needed, to ensure accuracy and efficiency
- Responsible for obtaining and maintaining laboratory accreditation and completing quarterly proficiency testing.
- Conduct routine Microbiological testing on finished products, products with a shelf life, raw materials, environmental samples, and water.
- Oversee analysis of samples collected as part of facility micro monitoring and environmental sampling, including reporting results and tracking corrective actions and follow-up sampling results.
- Serve as an administrator and Superuser for the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Responsible for ensuring that analytical results are maintained in LIMS, as well as maintaining historical databases.
- Conduct all testing and work in conformance with established Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and ISO 17025:2017.
- Advise the Lab Manager of any changes or updates to governmental and regulatory requirements.
- Responsible for identifying and implementing new equipment and techniques to expand laboratory capabilities and minimize the need for third-party testing.
- Provides expertise in interpreting laboratory results and determining corrective actions needed to address failures.
- Responsible for ensuring that instruments and equipment are maintained, repaired, and calibrated, and that inventory levels of chemicals, test kits, and other consumables are monitored and maintained.
Education and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in Food Safety, Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related discipline and three years’ experience in a food laboratory are preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- A strong background and knowledge of food industry microbiology and chemistry are required. A thorough understanding of food safety principles and HACCP is preferred.
- Must have experience with laboratory equipment such as Tempo, LIMS, autoclave, petrifilm reader, and other rapid methods.
- Experience in implementing new AOAC procedures and in evaluating equipment to advance new procedures in the Corporate Microbiology Laboratory.
- Must understand GLP requirements and certification/audit requirements.
- Must have experience in using a LIMS system
