Job Description:
The Assistant Teacher is a generalist who has the knowledge and skill necessary to work with elementary, middle and high school students with neurodiverse learning, communication, and social challenges, including autism, intellectual disabilities, and related disorders, who range in cognitive ability and who may have co-occurring mental health conditions, such as anxiety disorder, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The role of the Assistant Teacher will include working directly with elementary, middle and high students, as well as with specialist teachers and clinicians to adapt lessons, and teaching basic and functional academics, daily living skills, executive functioning skills, social behavior, communication skills, and vocational training, while focusing on each student’s individualized goals. The assistant teacher will be proficient in student assessment, instruction, curriculum development, and program evaluation. They will provide instruction both in the classroom and in the community.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Planning and Preparation: Support lead teacher in preparing lesson plans, grades, prepare and monitor ITEP goals, use a variety of instructional resources, collaborate with fellow Lead teachers and clinical staff, and collect data to support student outcomes.
- Classroom Environment: Use Positive Behavioral Supports to create and manage a safe, and engaging environment conducive to student learning, while maintaining good order and discipline.
- Instruction: Support lead teacher in organizing and managing individualized instruction for students. Engage students in meaningful work by inviting students to think critically, monitor students’ understanding while making instructional adjustments and provide students with appropriate feedback. Demonstrate implementation of appropriate problem-solving methods.
- Professional Responsibilities: Regularly and professionally communicate with parents to engage them in their child’s progress, participate in professional development trainings and meetings, supervise and document student behavior in school and during school related activities and perform other applicable duties as assigned by your supervisor.
- Policies & Procedures: Adhere to policies & procedures as stated in the Faculty Handbook. Maintain relevant data collection, respect privacy of student records, communication with families and community members, maintain attendance records, complete lesson planning and preparation, follow crisis intervention and behavior plans, follow emergency event plans, adhere to dress and attire policies, and follow safety protocols.
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as determined necessary for the benefit of the students and the school environment. Additional responsibilities will be reviewed and discussed with the administrative team.
Skills Required:
- Knowledge of special education theory and practice, as well as special education procedures and compliance.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrate the ability to work with students with neurodiverse learning, communication, and social challenges, including autism, intellectual disabilities, and related disorders, who range in cognitive ability and who may have co-occurring mental health conditions, such as anxiety disorder, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
- Knowledge of current technologies and software applications appropriate to the position’s responsibilities.
- Knowledge of Florida Standards and Access Points Curriculum, ability to differentiate and scaffold curriculum to meet students’ academic, behavior and vocational needs while ensuring progress towards individualized goals.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree or higher, from accredited university in special education or related field, bachelors preferred
- Valid FLDOE Paraprofessional Certification preferred
- Minimum of three (3) years classroom support or teaching experience in a setting with students with disabilities
