Job Title : HVAC Technician

Pay Grade : AU07

Workdays : Minimum Salary :

22.70 per hour

Type of Assignment : Non-Exempt

Mid-Point Salary : 27.09 per hour

Contract Status : At-Will

This position is locally funded.

Salary is determined on directly related experience supported by a service record or experience affidavit. Annualized pay may be pro-rated based on actual start date.

Position Summary

Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all HVAC systems. Always ensuring operational excellence to meet the educational needs of the district.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.
  • Valid Driver License with a good driving record (meet and maintain liability coverage eligibility by BISD Carrier).
  • Successful completion of a recognized HVAC vocational technical program or related courses.
  • Three (3) years' experience in HVAC or related field.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certified.
  • Satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in HVAC system maintenance to include HVAC package units (small and large), DX split system, chillers, etc.).
  • Experience with air handling units (AHU) maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of motor belts, actuators to ensure optimal operation of air handling systems.
  • Five (5) years' experience in HVAC or related field.
  • Experience installing, maintaining, and repairing variable speed drives (VFD).
  • Commercial application experience with both computer & pneumatic controls.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must be team oriented.
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude and ability to read blueprints and schematics
  • Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in various types of heating and air conditioning systems. Repair, replace, or calibrate controls including thermostats and switches.
  • Leads installations of new heating and air conditioning systems and components and relocation / and or expansion of existing HVAC systems as needed.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for all HVAC equipment, including changing of filters, cleaning condensers and coils. Perform duct cleaning and air quality testing, greasing motors, changing belts, and cleaning coils on a regular basis.
  • Assist in responsibility for the safe condition of boilers, heaters, furnaces, exhaust fans, air handlers, air conditioners and chillers in the facilities owned or operated by the district.
  • Receive and complete work orders in a timely manner.
  • Select materials and hardware, make time and materials cost estimates and maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
  • Ensure areas are safe and clean.
  • Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials including maintaining coolant dispensing records to meet federal requirements.
  • Recommend supplies and equipment for purchase as needed.
  • Respond to emergency HVAC calls as needed.
  • Prepare buildings for operation, which may include early morning, late night, weekend, or holiday work.
  • Attend meetings as requested by supervisors or district administration.
  • Work overtime as requested by supervisors or district administration.
  • Be respectful and courteous to parents, students and staff.
  • Take appropriate precautions in extreme weather conditions to ensure personal safety, such as wearing appropriate clothing and taking appropriate water breaks.
  • Dress and grooming should be appropriate. Wear proper uniform and name badge.
  • Read and respond to email in a timely manner.
  • Successfully complete classes and / or course work to stay current with advances in HVAC technology and best practices.
  • Complete all required training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Working Conditions

    Tools / Equipment Used : Operate HVAC tools such as meters, gauges, vacuum pumps and recovery equipment. Standard office equipment, including personal computer and peripherals.

    Posture : Frequent driving, standing, walking, climbing, balancing, knelling / squatting, bending / stooping, pushing / pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

    Motion : Repetitive hand motions, including grasping, squeezing, overhead reaching, climbing stairs / ladders, scaffolding, occasional keyboarding / use of mouse, frequent driving.

    Lifting : Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) daily.

    Environment : Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; may work on rooftops; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; may work irregular and prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel.

    Mental Demands : Work with frequent interruptions; work with frequent deadlines; maintain emotional control under stress.
