Position Summary
To support the achievement of District goals by maintaining the District’s fleet of vehicles and equipment in an efficient manner. Ensures that all vehicles are safe, reliable, and compliant with safety standards, providing safe transportation for students.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.
- Three (3) years experience as a fleet technician or equivalent.
- Valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license must obtain the class “B” CDL license with all required endorsements within 90 calendar days of employment (Paid Training Provided).
- Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility).
- Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
- At least 21 years of age.
- Must reside in the state of Texas.
- Must obtain School Bus Driver Certification (Texas Department of Public Safety) within 90 days calendar days of employment.
- Satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical school certificate of completion.
- Valid Texas Class “B” or “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with required “P” and “S” endorsements for school bus driver.
- ASE Master Diesel Technician or TASBT Master Certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

- Knowledge of school bus and automotive mechanical components.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform required repairs.
- Knowledge of work order and data management software.
- Knowledge of automotive diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to use equipment and tools required in vehicle repairs.
- Ability to operate a forklift.
- Knowledge of safety operations for shop.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety regulations, service manuals, and procedure manuals.
Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities
- Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
- Perform mechanical repairs on all systems of motor vehicles in the Boerne ISD fleet.
- Assist Lead Technician in completing repairs in a timely manner.
- Do welding and minor body work.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Service vehicles according to the preventative maintenance schedule.
- Maintain accurate and up to date records of all services performed.
- Inspect, diagnose, and evaluate the condition of vehicles and repair as necessary.
- Assist with training of new technicians as needed.
- Drives a school bus route as needed.
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to safety procedures
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to Lead Technician or Fleet Manager immediately.
- Help keep vehicles, shop, equipment, and tools clean and in safe operating condition
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete required corresponding reports.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
- Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment, computer, tire repair equipment, hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air power tools, welding torch, wire welder, torque wrench, jacks and lifts, air conditioning recycler, gauges, etc. Operate school bus; Two-way radio, PTT phone; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher.
Posture: Frequent standing and twisting; kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling. occasional driving and sitting. Work on vehicles and machinery with moving parts and in tight spaces.
Motion: Prolonged walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, and reaching. Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching.
Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying exceeding 45 pounds on a daily basis.
Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot, cold, damp, dry and other harsh weather conditions. Exposure to loud noise, and vehicle exhaust fumes, gasoline and diesel, solvents, acids and bases; work around moving vehicles; regularly work irregular hours, and occasionally work prolonged hours.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
