What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Environmental Educator position at BOGUS BASIN RECREATIONAL ASSOCIATION INC?
SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Environmental Education Coordinator, the Environmental Educator will work with a team to engage local youth in five day outdoor environmental education summer camp programs at Bogus Basin. Each day will start with a specific content focus designed to engage youth in hands-on, place-based activities. Content topics will range from ecology to safe and responsible outdoor recreation. The goal of this program is to foster a sense of appreciation for nature big and small for the youth. We hope to foster the next generation of ecologists, land managers, environmental stewards and more who will champion for access and preservation of our public lands and the world around them. The Environmental Educator will be trained to execute the educational activities, mentored to provide positive learning experiences for children in a summer camp setting, encouraged to create activities of their own interest that fit into our curriculum, and expected to positively redirect students’ behavior when necessary.
Transportation: Transportation is provided up and down the mountain from the Fort Boise Community Center.
Duration: May 19th- 23rd, 9am-4pm (Training Week); May 26th - August 8th, 8:30am-4pm (Camp)
- There may be an opportunity to extend position through the fall. This includes work with fall field trips, outreach programs, and on mountain stewardship and sustainability projects.
** The week of June 30th through July 4th is off for mid-summer break. June 19th is off for Juneteenth .
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Thoughtfully plan and organize lessons and activities.
- Lead and set up a variety of youth based activities.
- Lead and engage groups of youth in a forest environment.
- Teach on the trail and spend the day outdoors in a variety of weather.
- Positively redirect misbehavior when necessary.
- Create a safe learning environment.
- Maintain a professional attitude toward all students, staff, supervisors, and other departments.
- Work as a team with other field instructors to carry out programing
- Assist with sustainability and stewardship jobs, including but not limited to, native seed collecting and spreading, recycling sorting, invasive weed surveying and removal.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Perform other duties, as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Passionate about Bogus Basin’s Mission.
- Ability to work with people of all ages, especially children. Have a strong interest in nature education, and educating youth (ages 9-14).
- Need to be reliable, flexible, creative, enthusiastic, enjoy working with children, and have some experience teaching.
- Ability to make sound decisions under stressful situations.
- Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks in a timely and accurate manner.
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Ability to perform essential duties efficiently and accurately, with or without supervision, and without injury to incumbent or others.
- Ability to stand, balance, walk and reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to hike on uneven terrain for distances up to 4 miles with a backpack weighing up to 25lbs.
- Ability to navigate mountainous terrain with or without GPS or maps.
- Ability to occasionally stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Outdoor environment; exposed to inclement weather and adverse conditions.
- Working with groups of children daily.
