Description
The Summer Weekend Nature Guide will lead nature-based, guided hikes and programs at Bogus Basin on Saturdays and Sundays. Working under the Environmental Education Coordinator, this position will share knowledge of the local flora & fauna as they tour the hiking trails on the mountain. The Weekend Nature Guide will also work with local experts on select hikes throughout the summer giving opportunity for themed programs. Through these hikes and programs we hope foster curiosity in participants of the natural world. This Guide will work at the Information Booth, greeting guests on the mountain and helping provide information about the various activities Bogus Basin offers in the summer.
Essential Functions of the Job
- Thoughtfully plan and organize nature hikes with relevant talking points and group assessable routes
- Lead and engage groups of adults and youth in a forest environment (10-15 individuals on average)
- Teach on the trail and spend the day outdoors in a variety of weather
- Lead and set up a variety of youth based activities during “Yoga on the Mountain”
- Create a safe & fun learning environment
- Coordinate with industry experts for “guest speaker” hikes
- Work with supervisor to ensure proper marketing of hikes & programs
- Maintain a professional attitude toward all students, staff, supervisors, and other departments
- Welcome guests to Bogus Basin and provide them with information to enjoy their time on the mountain
Non-Essential Functions of the Job

Requirements
- Passionate about Bogus Basin’s Mission.
- Strong knowledge of Bogus Basin’s ecology, hydrology, geology, and flora & fauna
- Must consider themselves a competent naturalist
- Have a good knowledge of Bogus Basin and the surrounding area
- Ability to work with people of all ages. Have a strong interest in nature education
- Need to be reliable, flexible, creative, enthusiastic, enjoy working with children, and have some experience teaching
- Must able to think on their feet and be able to re-route mid-hike when necessary
- Ability to make sound decisions under stressful situations
- Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks in a timely and accurate manner
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting
- Ability to pass a background check
- Ability to perform essential duties efficiently and accurately, with or without supervision, and without injury to incumbent or others
- Ability to stand, balance, walk and reach with hands and arms
- Ability to hike on uneven terrain for distances up to 5 miles with a backpack weighing up to 20lbs
- Ability to navigate mountainous terrain with or without GPS or maps
- Ability to occasionally stoop, kneel, or crouch
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
Working Conditions
- Outdoor environment; exposed to inclement weather and adverse conditions.
- Working with groups of children daily.
