Flexible Workplace 
 
This role is a flex office/home role and comes with the expectation you will engage onsite a certain number of working days per month, in our brand-new office located in Dublin, Ohio, with your Bold Penguin colleagues and customers.  On-site workdays will be managed at the team level to maintain an environment focused on work-life balance, innovation velocity, and the delivery of exceptional customer experiences. 
 
In this role, you will be expected to work 20% of working days per month (4 days per month on average) in the office.  This is a minimum expectation.  All employees are welcome to work in the office as much as they like. Applicants must be local (within 35 miles) to Dublin, Ohio. 
 
 
YOUR ROLE
The Attorney will report to the General Counsel, while managing the paralegal team and providing guidance on a wide range of legal matters to a diverse range of business teams. This role requires an experienced attorney with strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of contract writing, negotiation, and management, as well as corporate law, litigation, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will be personable, proactive, results-driven, and able to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders. The Attorney must also work independently, demonstrate initiative, and collaborate cross-functionally with business units across the Company to drive strategic objectives forward.
 
 
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Legal Leadership & Team Management: 
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a paralegal team, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.
  • Provide coaching and professional development opportunities to team members. 
  • Oversee the allocation and completion of legal tasks, ensuring that all legal matters are handled efficiently and in a timely manner. 
  • Set performance objectives, evaluate team performance, and ensure the team meets its legal service delivery goals. 
Contract Management & Negotiations: 
  • Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of complex contracts and agreements, ensuring that the organization’s interests are protected. 
  • Work with internal stakeholders to ensure contracts comply with relevant laws and company policies. 
  • Develop and implement standardized templates, policies, and procedures for contract management to improve efficiency and consistency. 
Strategic Legal Counsel: 
  • Provide proactive, business-focused legal counsel on matters such as contract negotiation, licensing matters, intellectual property, employment matters, and ethics issues. 
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g., Finance, HR, and Compliance) to develop strategies that mitigate legal risks while supporting business goals. 
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on potential legal risks in new business initiatives, product development, and partnerships. 
  • Work independently to manage and resolve legal issues, ensuring timely and effective solutions that align with business objectives. 
Corporate Governance & Compliance: 
  • Collaborate with Compliance and Information Security to ensure adherence to all applicable laws and regulations, including local, state, federal, and international laws, as relevant to the business. 
  • Ensure the organization’s adherence to ethical business practices and internal policies, collaborating internally to conduct regular compliance audits as necessary. 
  • Monitor emerging legal trends and regulatory changes, advise the Company on any impact on operations, and recommend changes to policies and practices.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience: 
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to the Ohio State Bar. 
  • 5-7 years of experience practicing law.  
  • Experience in corporate law, regulatory compliance, contract law, litigation, and employment law is strongly preferred. 
  • Proven track record of handling complex legal matters in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. 
  • Experience in insurance or technology is preferred.
Skills & Competencies: 
  • Knowledge of contract law and sound drafting principles
  • Understanding of government regulations affecting the insurance, consumer protection, and technology industry
  • Ability to analyze and interpret statutes, regulations, contracts, policies, guidance, and other legal texts
  • Strong leadership abilities with a demonstrated ability to manage, mentor, and develop a team. 
  • Proven track record of working successfully in collaborative settings with colleagues at all levels
  • Ability to work independently, make decisions with minimal supervision, and demonstrate initiative in resolving legal matters. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex legal issues clearly and effectively to non-legal stakeholders. 
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information. 
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to manage high-pressure situations with a focus on achieving optimal results for the business. 
  • Exceptional problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. 
  • Deep understanding of the latest legal developments, trends, and best practices in the corporate and regulatory environment. 
Additional Qualifications: 
  • Experience in Insurtech is highly desirable. 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across different functions, balancing legal requirements with business needs. 
  • Experience with international legal issues or cross-border transactions is a plus. 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to sit/stand/walk for prolonged periods of time, (up to 8 hours per day) at a desk working on a computer.  
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment for extended periods of time, including but not limited to, a mouse, keyboard, phone and video conferencing.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to access and navigate the corporate office.
