Job Title: Naval Architect

Position Overview: A Naval Architect is responsible for developing designs for marine craft and floating structures, such as ships, barges, and tugs. This role involves performing calculations to support the design, fabrication, and compliance of these vessels with regulatory standards.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Five (5) years of naval architecture experience.
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture from an accredited university is preferred. (A degree in a related engineering discipline may also be considered.)

Minimum Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in understanding and applying ABS, CFR, USCG, NVIC, SOLAS, and other relevant rules and regulations.
  • Expertise in computer-assisted engineering tools, including AutoCAD, General Hydrostatics (GHS), and FEMAP.
  • Capability to develop design calculations and produce deliverables with minimal supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and define the shapes of ship and boat hulls.
  • Assess designs and products to ensure compliance with regulatory and contractual standards, focusing on stability and performance.
  • Conduct structural analyses of vessels’ primary structures and foundation designs.
  • Perform stability analyses (including intact, damage, and probabilistic calculations) and oversee inclining experiments.
  • Predict and evaluate vessel performance during trials and operational phases.
  • Perform load line and tonnage calculations to support regulatory certifications and vessel general arrangements.
  • Review design proposals and specifications to establish key vessel characteristics, such as size, weight, speed, propulsion, and draft.
  • Assist in the layout of vessel interiors, including cargo space, passenger areas, and access components.
  • Monitor and evaluate vessel performance during dock and sea trials to identify design adjustments and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Execute specialized calculations, such as launch, lift, and turn computations, and develop fire and safety plans as required.
  • Adhere to all company policies, including safety, environmental, and quality system standards.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by management.
  • Work overtime as necessary.
  • Maintain punctuality and regular attendance.
