The Respiratory Care Practitioner II Role
The Respiratory Care Practitioner II is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. They perform all respiratory care procedures within their scope of license.
They monitor the patient's response to therapies and make recommendations to change or modify based on the assessment. The practitioner may serve as the shift 'Charge Therapist' with responsibility for ensuring adequate staffing levels.
In collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team, they conduct initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyze assessment data, create a plan of care, implement treatment, and evaluate treatment effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform treatments and therapies according to physician orders.
- Explain therapy and therapeutic goals to patients.
- Determine appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommend methods to physicians.
- Maintain proper documentation, patient medical charting, and recordkeeping.
- Maintain established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
Education and Certification Requirements:
- Current Respiratory Care License in the state they are working (required).
- National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentialed (required).
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred).
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AAP/AWHONN (preferred), required for Roper St Francis Healthcare.
- ACCS (Adult Critical Care Specialist) - NBRC (preferred).
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field (preferred).
Work Experience:
- Two years of experience as a Respiratory Care Professional (required).
Certifications:
- EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).
Patient Population:
- Pediatrics (1-12 years).
- Adults (18-64 years).
Safety Precautions:
- Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
Other Job Requirements:
- Strong interpersonal skills and able to effectively interact with patients, their families, physicians, and other staff members.
- Able to gather and interpret data.
- Knowledge of non-invasive respiratory therapy equipment such as oximeters or end-tidal CO2 analyzers.
- Therapeutic Procedures include CPAP/BiPap, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high flow oxygen, continuous aerosols, ventilator management, diagnostic testing.
- Understanding of EKGs, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
- Arterial blood gas punctures and testing.
- Knowledge of chest suction equipment.
