Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:
The ultrasound technologist performs ultrasound procedures and related techniques, producing images for interpretation by licensed independent practitioners. May be required to learn vascular exams (venous duplex scans). Direct patient care is performed in a timely and compassionate manner.
Essential Job Functions:
- Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying ID, and ensuring appropriate procedure.
- Explains procedure to patient; prepares patient by obtaining and recording history and consent form (if applicable).
- Ensures patient comfort, privacy, and safety during procedure; monitors condition and reports changes to patient care services.
- Documents sonographer's impressions and relays findings to physician.
- Obtains and records necessary images; documents pertinent information, lab values, patient histories.
- Maintains clinical competency particularly related to patients who are newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric as deemed necessary by designated facility.
- Participates in performance improvement projects.
- Assists department in achieving successful results in audits.
Licensing/Certification:
- Credentialed in Ultrasound technology by one of the following: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or Sonographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care).
Education:
Associates, America Medical Association (AMA) allied health training program in Ultrasound (preferred).
Work Experience:
1 year experience as an Ultrasound Tech (preferred).
Training:
- EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) (preferred).
- Picture archiving communication system (PACS) (preferred).
