Clinic Based Medical Assistant/Licensed Athletic Trainer (LAT)

Summary: Perform routine clinical and procedural tasks to keep the Wausau, Merrill, Medford and Plover offices and clinics running smoothly. This position also works to provide quality athletic training coverage including injury prevention programs, emergency care, rehabilitation and treatment for local high school athletic programs and events, when clinic schedule allows. This position will also provide support to our DME program.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  1. Clinic Duties/Responsibilities
  • Prepares for clinic by doing chart review and entering data into AthenaPractice. (Quality)
  • Assists athletes in completing online post injury ImPACT testing. (Service)
  • Prepares for clinic by stocking exam rooms and cast room with necessary supplies. (Financial)
  • Communicates any clinic delays to Registration Staff to proactively manage patient wait times. (Service)
  • Escorts patients to exam room, using AIDET tool; every patient every time. (People)
  • Assists patients in completing Health History form. (Patient Link) (Service)
  • Takes and records Vital Signs on every patient. (Quality)
  • Accurately enters patient information in the EMR including PT Orders, RTW form, Medication reconciliation and verifies on follow up appointments. (Service)
  • Completes all CMS and ANI quality reporting metrics on each patient. (Quality)
  • Coordinates the care and flow of patient between physician and APP.(Service)
  • Accurately schedules tests, procedures, rechecks, post op appointments and referrals to other facilities and tracks results. (Quality)
  • Accurately enters x-ray orders in the EMR then uses light system to notify Radiology of order. (Quality)
  • Explains treatment procedures to patient and prepare patients for examination. (Service)
  • Performs Room and Round every 10 minutes until patient is evaluated by provider, every patient every time. (People)
  • Applies splints and casts as ordered by provider, teaches cast care to the patient. (Quality)
  • Cleans/straightens exam rooms between patients; properly disposes of contaminated supplies in accordance with OSHA standards. (Quality)
  • Assists other providers and peers when needed. (Service)
  • Assists organization in reaching and maintaining 90% or higher Customer Service scores. (Service)
  • May fill in for other medical staff, covering vacations, etc. on an as-needed basis. (Service)
  • Attends weekly huddles, monthly clinical staff meetings, and all training sessions as LAT schedule permits. (Quality)
  • Assists with DME distribution throughout the clinic as needed. (Service)

  1. Recognition, Evaluation & Treatment of Athletic Injury & Illness
  • Recognizes signs & symptoms of athletic injury & illness. (Quality)
  • Understands & performs proper evaluation/assessment techniques for athletic injury and illness. (Quality)
  • Develops treatment & rehabilitation programs in accordance with findings of evaluations and goals established by the injury assessment or by a treating health care professional (i.e. physician, physical therapist). (Quality)
  • Assesses athlete's status in response to treatment and modifies program and athlete's activities as appropriate/warranted. (Quality)
  • Educates coaches and athletes on prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. (Quality)
  • Assists in return-to-play preparation/decisions. (Quality)
  • Facilitates clinic appointments for athletes who have been injured or concussed and require follow up. (Quality)

  1. Quality, Dependability & Efficiency at High School
  • Answers calls promptly. (Service)
  • Accepts additional sports medicine coverage responsibilities & duties as assigned or requested. (Service)
  • Able to perform duties in an efficient & independent manner with minimal supervision. (Service)
  • Reports for school & event coverage at designated time and gives proper notice of absences & tardiness. (Service)

  1. H.S. Health Care Administration & Professional Development
  • Maintains statistics and injury logs and utilizes Healthy Roster software program to tack and communicate. (Growth)
  • Demonstrates proper communication with, and referral to, the appropriate health care provider (i.e. physicians, physical therapists). (People)
  • Attends coaches' meetings at the high school as established. (People)
  • Meets criteria for certification as established with respect to CPR and CEU's. (Quality)
  • Maintains physical environment (i.e. training room) in an effective, organized manner. (Service)
  • Using AIDET communicates with athletes, parents and coaches regarding appropriate medical treatment plan. (Quality)
  • Establishes & maintains professional relationships with physicians, PT's, LAT's, AD's, coaches and athletes. (People)
  • Recommends new equipment and supplies to ensure optimal quality of athlete's care. (Service)
  • Prevents/corrects problems or unsafe conditions. (Quality)



Education/Experience:

  • Nationally certified through the NATA Board of Certification
  • Current LAT Wisconsin Licensure
  • BLS certification required

Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years of experience with team sports preferred
  • Strong key boarding skills
  • Must be willing and able to travel and commit to evening and weekend event coverage
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Must represent Bone & Joint in a professional and ethical manner
  • Strong oral, written and presentation skills

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is also frequently required to stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
