FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Nature of Work

This position performs senior and/or lead-level technical or specialized work in installing, maintaining, and repairing wastewater production and treatment systems, equipment, and facilities. Installs, maintains, and repairs gravity systems. Other areas of responsibility include lift stations, gravity lines, and force mains. Work is performed under minimal supervision with considerable latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position relies on experience and exercises independent judgment to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures. Exercises judgment in accordance with well-defined policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist and direct staff in various work-related tasks.
  • Dispatch crews to job sites.
  • Ensure the safety of staff and provide necessary safety equipment.
  • Provide necessary tools/material to complete assigned tasks.
  • Oversee the installation, maintenance, and repair of various electrical and mechanical components and equipment (i.e., pumps, motors, compressors, valves, lines, etc.).
  • Preventative maintenance on electrical, mechanical, and manual equipment, machinery, and components according to assigned schedules or as necessary.
  • Inspect and test tools, vehicles, and safety gear; reviews and restocks supplies; performs service vehicle inventory.
  • Operate a variety of small equipment including but not limited to, forklifts, boom trucks, high-pressure cleaner/vacuum trucks, and closed-circuit television trucks
  • Fabricate materials and parts by welding, brazing, and cutting torches.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and manual control systems.
  • Monitor and ensure proper environmental and safety conditions per work site; ensures proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals, cleaners, and caustic solutions.
  • Observe action and ensure records of all work/service performed are accurate and current (i.e., motor ampere, raw water, pump and motor performance, and part replacement).
  • Report detected deterioration, repair needs, and maintenance to the supervisor.
  • Provide training to other members of the department.
  • Safeguards all assigned tools, equipment, and electronics from theft, loss, destruction and/or negligence.
  • Follow and enforce applicable safety policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership to lower-level technicians.
  • Remain in contact via company phone / radio at all times in the event of an emergency.
  • Attend and may facilitate weekly safety meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Computer systems, telemetry, and instrumentation.
  • Electrical components and the supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA).
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Sewer and water line construction and the safe use of high-pressure cleaning, air velocities, and smoke testing procedures.
  • Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Software applications and systems used in functional area.
  • Operation of various computers or other electronic devices.
  • Working with mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Lead the department in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Provide direction, leadership, and training to lower-level technicians.
  • Interpret graphs and read daily telemetry reports.
  • Utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive design, and/or advisory data.
  • Work independently or as part of a team.
  • Evaluate the work of others and provide assistance and/or training as necessary.
  • Clearly communicate and understand information, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with both internal and external contacts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; supplemented by four (4 ) or more years’ of progressively responsible skilled electrical/mechanical systems maintenance and repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with Class “B” CDL with Tanker and Air Brakes endorsements.
  • State of Florida Class “A” Wastewater Collection certificate (If Class “A” has not been obtained, employee must actively be pursuing the higher certification).
