What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Custodian position at BONNABEL HIGH?
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To assist the plant manager in being responsible for the safety, security, cleanliness and appearance of the physical plan; and to assure full responsibility in the absence of the Head Custodian.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Opens building in morning; secures building in afternoon.
- Operates heating and air conditioning system in absence of engineer.
- Sees that rooms are properly ventilated.
- Replaces light globes or fluorescent tubes.
- Receives supplies, checks inventory requesting janitorial supplies; supplies custodial staff; cafeteria and stadium.
- Reports vandalism immediately to principal and keeps reports.
- Reports daily to principal on condition of school.
- Checks fire fighting equipment and playground equipment for good functioning and safety.
- Repairs, removes or secures any unsafe equipment, reports same to principal.
- Cuts and maintains school yard and shrubs, watering regularly.
- Removes trash and debris from premises.
- Buffs floors when appropriate.
- Maintains cleanliness of halls and entrances during day.
- Checks boys dressing rooms during day.
- Clean classroom units as specified in accordance with work schedule and specified school needs.
- Raises and lowers flag.
- Is available for school and school sponsored activities. Outside agencies will pay for use of building as prescribed in policy manual.
- Sets up for assemblies, conferences, plays, programs when required.
- Supervises custodial staff, inspects their work, assign duties keeps and reports the time for himself and personnel, etc. in coordination with principal.
- Light maintenance functions, makes minor repairs such as replacing faucet handles, light switches, door knobs and door adjustments, glass repairs, painting, etc. for all buildings on school plant.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Plant Manager.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS WORKED:
- All weather conditions, winter and summer.
- Employee is expected to provide and wear appropriate clothing for conditions of the day.
- Work day consists of eight hours per day with one half hour for lunch.
- Overtime, i.e., after hours. Saturday and Sunday is occasionally required.
- Plant Managers/custodial personnel may be required to work a split shift.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
- Must be able to read and comprehend service order and repair request documents, and write out job completion information.
- Basic math skills are necessary to review purchase receipts and timekeeping information.
EQUIPMENT USED:
- Electric and/or air driven power tools, i.e., saws, drill motors, table tools, etc.
- Electric buffers, strippers, mop, push broom, etc. Power lawn equipment, riding mower, gas weed trimmer, edger rake, etc.
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:
- Walking and carrying tools, equipment, building materials, etc., are constant, everyday requirements.
- Surfaces vary including mud conditions after a rain, gravel, concrete, dirt, grass, etc. Climbing 6, 8, 10, and 12 foot step ladder, extension ladder, stairs and scaffolding are routinely required.
- This climbing often includes carrying of tools, building materials, etc.
- Trunk flexion and squatting are necessary requirements in accomplishing tasks such as working under raised buildings, in attic spaces, toilet room enclosures, etc., again often necessitating carrying tools, building materials, etc.
- Lifting is required daily in accomplishing tasks.
- Building materials, electrical panels, small generator and pump equipment, desks, full mop buckets, etc., are necessarily moved, in some cases loaded and unloaded from vehicles. 50 pounds is the maximum expected load for one person.
- Two and three person coordinated lifting is occasionally required.
MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
- Schedule, plan, and coordinate personnel in multiple job tasks.
- Interface with all levels of administrators in the system.
- Interface with contractors, assigning and monitoring work.
- Comprehend and/or produce written instructions.
HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:
- Resolve personnel disputes with fairness, maintaining the best interest of the JPPSS.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be able to read and write effectively and be able to comprehend instruction on operation of equipment of all types and use of chemicals and have the ability to perform light maintenance functions.
