What You’ll Be Responsible For
- Responsible for all Niles plant safety & environmental operations and compliance on a 24/7 basis.
- Provides Safety and Environmental Compliance Direction to
- 10-25 salaried employees
- 150-400 hourly employees
- Assists Division EHS Director and EHS Managers at other Bonnell locations in establishing strategic safety and environmental direction; and crafting and implementing safety and environmental policies and procedures that support Bonnell’s short- and long-term objectives.
- Develop & communicate safety and environmental policies and procedures for the Niles plant
- Ensure consistent focus in safety & environmental systems and alignment with other plants
- Responsible for maintaining and improving an environmental management system (ISO14001) at the plant level, which ensures compliance with or exceeds the requirements of environmental laws, regulations, policies, and guidance documents.
- Responsible for managing safety and environmental demands with manufacturing demands (costs, productivity, environmental compliance, quality requirements, safety and sense of urgency)
- Responsible for conservation of resources and reuse/recycling of waste to control costs and minimize and eliminate waste streams and emissions.
- Responsible for achieving goodwill and representing the company/plant with employees, the community, and regulatory environmental groups.
- Responsible for chemical management and inventory of chemicals, including usage and management of safety data sheets. Review for approval of any new chemicals prior to their use relating to environmental and safety considerations.
- Manage Waste streams and conduct proper waste disposal characterizations.
- Ensure implementation of and compliance with all company safety and environmental regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Review all reports of near misses, first aid, and recordable injuries. Determine using OSHA guidelines and letters of interpretation when an injury becomes recordable. Maintain OSHA 300/301 logs.
- Responsible for communicating safety and environmental incidents following a chain of command to ensure that the proper management and authorities are notified in a timely manner or as required by regulation.
- Responsible for care/case management of injured employees and follow-through on worker compensation claims.
- Responsible for root cause investigations and assignment of corrective actions. Review incident reports within the safety incident reporting system. Prepare safety reports and conduct safety action calls following an incident.
- Management of the Risk Elimination System. Drive the culture of reporting all safety concerns with a “see it and fix it” approach. Review all risk eliminations identified by employees to determine where the corrective actions implemented are on the hierarchy of controls.
- Responsible for leading and directing a floor-level Safety Action Team to perform safety audits, develop corrective actions, ensure timely execution of corrective actions, and verify the effectiveness of corrective actions.

- Manage corrective actions following any safety or environmental inspection, audit, or incident.
- Ability to effectively communicate to management and employees information, expectations, and requirements that are clear, concise, and accurate in a way people can comprehend.
- Ability to effectively report on key metrics, challenges, and opportunities to Plant Manager and Division EHS Director.
- Writing skills to document corrective actions and management of change for the findings.
- Ability to effectively communicate safety and environmental awareness to management and the workforce to keep them abreast of current and changing conditions. Implement management of change processes.
- Communicate with management, department heads, and other employees concerning environmental and safety issues.
- Determine how environmental regulations can impact new or proposed Bonnell Aluminum processes.
- Develop strategic relationships with regulatory agencies, attorneys, and consultants.
- Working knowledge of Federal environmental regulations and at least one state’s environmental regulations (preferably Michigan).
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations (including MI OSHA).
- Thorough understanding of safety and environmental compliance issues.
- Ability to manage all waste generation including any hazardous, universal, special, and/or solid waste. Conduct waste determination for disposal and/or recycling in accordance with State and Federal standards.
- Ability to manage recycling and reuse systems necessary for plant compliance or operations.
- Organizational skills for adequate recordkeeping of waste disposal and recycling based on waste determination for regulatory reporting, audit purposes, and compliance with environmental permits and Federal requirements.
- Organizational skills to acquire, manage, and maintain all environmental permits associated with the plant and plan for new environmental regulations.
- Technical writing abilities to clearly and concisely communicate internally and to regulatory agencies.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other necessary computer programs.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in an engineering or environmental-related field.
- 3 years in a safety or environmental-related field
- Environmental and/or Safety regulatory experience
- Interacting with audits and inspections
