SHOP MANAGER
Job Description
SUMMARY: Responsible for planning, budgeting, coordinating, and directing of effective equipment maintenance and repair programs. Acts as technical advisor on all equipment issues and assists leadership team with equipment budgets and potential equipment purchases. Deploys equipment, water trucks, and maintenance trucks; deploys mechanics to jobsites when needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervision and Development:
- Ensure Supervise Mechanics and Shop employees to ensure that repairs are performed timely and with quality
- Provide guidelines to Operators and Foremen as needed to ensure safe and effective operation
- Manage the performance and development of the Shop Team, Drivers, and Dispatch
- Oversee employees’ accountability for their work
Shop Management:
- Work with Accounting to analyze MTD, YTD, and LTD heavy equipment costs to establish and/or update hourly allocation rates (Revenue Codes)
- Coordinate the deployment of maintenance trucks and mechanics to ensure that the crews have the right equipment according to schedules
- Ensure that the company fleet is well maintained
- Manage fuel, oil, and equipment related accounts. Consider cost and customer service on account management decisions
- Maintain repair log sheets for vehicles and equipment, to include mandatory “CDL” equipment files
- Coordinate repairs and maintenance with mechanics. Generate purchase orders for repairs and/or required maintenance
- Purchase small tools and any supplies needed for the equipment and/or work crews
- Issue purchase orders in accordance with company policy and accounting system
- Prepare purchase orders for heavy rental equipment. Track each piece of rented equipment by jobsite and job number
- Responsible for weekly timesheets for shop personnel
- Input and manage the GPS system for company equipment and fleet
- Meet with sales representatives and negotiate equipment purchases
- Collect oil samples from the service truck operator and have them tested for any sign of engine wear
- Visit jobsites to check on equipment for wear and tear or any sign of abuse
- Responsible for procuring rental equipment
- Update equipment values for insurance and tax purposes on at least a yearly basis
Safety:
- Manage inspection schedule of equipment to comply with company safety policies
- Report unsafe practices as apparent from on-time or recurring equipment or fleet repairs
- Provide MSDS to Safety Manager whenever new products are purchased
Job Requirements and Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED or the equivalent
- Three to five years’ experience in road construction and working with Asphalt
- Valid Drivers License
- Ability to learn and utilize time-tracking and job costing software Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with heavy-equipment operation
- Leadership skills
- Manage employee schedules and overtime in an efficient manner
- Bilingual in English & Spanish is a plus
