Starting Salary : $150.00 Monthly Retention Stipend $20.00 per hour for hours worked

- Candidates will be reviewed and considered on a continuous basis until this position is filled or closed, whichever comes first.
On- Call Deputy Coroners must be available and willing to work a flexible on-call schedule.
General Purpose
Perform a variety of investigative and administrative duties under the direct supervision of the Elected Coroner to support the requirements of the Idaho Code, including responding to and participating in investigations of unnatural, unattended, or suspicious deaths, in accordance with Coroner and Medicolegal Death Investigator duties.

Essential Functions
Respond to all calls within the Coroner's jurisdiction under Idaho Code 19-4301, requiring a Medicolegal Death Investigation, in accordance with Bonneville County Coroner's Office policies and procedures.
Respond to and participates in the on-scene investigations of unnatural and / or unattended deaths and take custody of the bodies within Bonneville County which occur as a result of homicide, suicide, accidental causes, when a death occurs under suspicious or unknown circumstances or when the physician attending during the last illness cannot certify the cause of death.
Adhere to all Bonneville County safety and employee policies and procedures.
Maintain a working call schedule.
Conduct investigations to help determine cause, manner and mechanism of death. Conduct a full investigation set by national standards including but not limited to : a full scene investigation, examination, photographing and documentation, and taking samples (blood, tissue, etc.)
Identify the deceased and assist in identifying next of kin and notify families of the deceased.
Maintain accurate records and proper chain of custody of evidence and prepare investigative reports according to Bonneville County Coroner's Office Policy and Idaho State Statue.
Assist and coordinate with law enforcement, healthcare practitioners, funeral homes, insurance investigators, attorneys and the media.
Request police reports, medical records from hospitals and / or physicians to complete the death investigation.
Help facilitate the arrangement of autopsies from the Forensic Institute for Autopsies done by a forensic pathologist including : preparing required documentation for the forensic pathologist, scheduling autopsies, body transportation to and from autopsy, and notifying the appropriate investigators of the time and findings. Attend Autopsies as required.
Review death reports for completeness and accuracy. Utilize the results of all investigation procedures to help complete the Death Certificates in a timely manner. Catalog Death Certificates and / or cremation authorizations with Vital Statistics.
Coordinating with the Regional Organ Procurement Agencies in the event of tissue donation.
Assure proper chain of custody of evidence and releasing property when necessary.
Maintain required certifications, credentials, and standards for office accreditation and personnel certification. Attend training as required.
May be required to attend depositions, inquests, and court hearings providing relevant information and testimony.
Completes all required reports in a timely manner and utilizes assigned computerized records and reporting systems. Keeps informed of the status of cases and notifies Coroner.
Ability to maintain regular, reliable patterns in work product and attendance according to the Bonneville County Coroner's expectations.
Perform other job- related duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Education and Experience :
A. Graduation from high school;
B. Must have a degree from an accredited university in a related field or training, such as law enforcement, forensic science, biology, health science or paramedical training.
2. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Working knowledge of Medicolegal investigative techniques, interviewing techniques and procedures; Human anatomy and physiology and basic medical terminology; Law Enforcement terminology and procedures; Applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations regarding Coroner statutes and evidence collection; Resources used in obtaining applicable data; Coroner's archives record-keeping practices .
Ability to remain on-call during specified time periods and must be able to work shifts as required; When on call, must be available 24 hours a day by phone and have the ability to be dispatched to death scenes in a timely manner; Work death scenes and observe, note details, document, adopt effective courses of action, and draw appropriate conclusions; Perform work successfully in high stress situations, use photographic equipment and take photographs, operate passenger cars or light trucks safely; Obtain and analyze information and evidence by observation, record examination and interview; Secure and present evidence in oral and written form; Interpret and comply with laws and regulations governing investigation; Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with a variety of individuals and agencies; Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Dress appropriately and professionally and be prepared for all types of weather; Displays a constructive attitude and works cooperatively and constructively with fellow workers and members of the public to provide public service of the highest quality; Learn and progress to the point where the Coroner's Office will be the direct responsibility of the Chief Deputy or Deputy in the absence of the coroner for any length of time. Must have the ability to prioritize cases, multitask and make independent decisions.
Strong Skills in providing comfort and assistance to people grieving or have suffered the loss of a decedent. Basic computer skills for data entry with an emphasis on Microsoft Office products specifically Word. Must have good cognitive skills and awareness of work accuracy.

Tasks require a variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular exertion, but do require physical activities such as standing, walking, and sitting for long periods of time, reaching, climbing up and down ladders, stairs and rough and / or uneven terrain, talking, and hearing. Must have acceptable eyesight to perform investigator duties. In addition, incumbent must be able to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, kneel, crawl, squat, and balance. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity is required to perform essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, and problem solving. Exposure to potential stress inducing written, video, and photographic evidence related to criminal investigations is common. Some aspects of tasks may cause exposure to hazardous or dangerous work area situations.
Work is performed in a variety of settings both indoors and outdoors and may include adverse weather conditions, without normal indoor climate controls. Must be able to travel to and from various work sites. Work requires the ability to lift, carry, drag, or push and average body weight of 100 to 200 pounds or more both alone and with help. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
