Position Description
Title: Educational Specialist- Mild / Moderate
Department: Special Education
Reports To: Principal/Director of Special Education
Under supervision of the Principal/Director of Special Education, this person is required to provide appropriate educational support to individuals with exceptional needs.
EDUCATION
Valid California Teaching Credential with Mild / Moderate Certification.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
• Provides a physical and emotional environment, which is conducive to learning
• Monitor progress in the Resource Specialist program and in the regular classroom of the individuals on a regular basis
• Utilize teaching methods which are varied, appropriate, flexible, stimulating, creative, democratic and which encourage independence, logical thinking and individual expression
• Maintains proper control and discipline in a positive manner by establishing good, wholesome rapport
• Attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings for all Resource students and others when appropriate
• Participate as a member of the IEP or Student Study Team (SST), when appropriate
• Conduct appropriate assessments for the identification and review of students with special needs
• Help parents to understand their child’s academic abilities, including strengths and weaknesses
• Develop appropriate goals and objectives for IEPs aligned with the state standards
• Evaluate progress towards goals
• Provide services to students according to their IEP
• Function as a case manager for students on the caseload including developing the IEP
• Develop and maintain records for students on the caseload
• Attend site and district staff meetings
• Order equipment and materials for the Resource Program
• Perform other related duties as assigned
• Provide clear communication about students, including strategies, to parents and general education students
• Maintain positive working relationships with staff members through collaboration, consultation and cooperation
• Other related duties as assigned

ABILITIES
Plan and deliver an effective instructional program; adapt the curriculum and materials to meet the individual needs of students; analyze and interpret test scores for the purpose of determining eligibility and individual goals; effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to use computer software to assist the program; use proper English; understand and follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective cooperative working relationships with others; communicate well; keep all appropriate school-related information and knowledge confidential.
