What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accountant position at Boone Electric Cooperative?
Boone Electric Cooperative currently has an opening for a full-time Accountant in our Finance Department. This position will report to the Manager of Finance. Primary job functions are, but are not limited to the following:
- Works collaboratively with the department to maintain the Cooperative’s system of books and general ledger accounts by performing the appropriate reconciliation of accounts and journal entries to report the financial condition to management through the preparation of standard financial reports including income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows.
- Ensures the financial integrity of the Cooperative by performing tests of existing internal control procedures set up to safeguard the assets of Cooperative and its subsidiaries as directed by the Manager of Finance.
- Maintains the accounts payable system of the Cooperative and its subsidiaries by processing purchase orders, payment vouchers, payment approval, issuance of payments, and archiving invoices.
- Processes the Cooperative’s payroll including updating employee information and wages as well as inputting any additional payroll items as needed and issuing bi-weekly payroll.
- Balances and maintains multiple cash accounts to ensure the accuracy of all disbursements and receipts.
- Properly accounts for and maintains fixed asset system, continuing property records (CPR), material inventory, fleet assets, and construction work orders to track cooperative distribution plant.
- Prepare and file required federal, state, and local tax or regulatory filings. This includes, but is not limited to sales tax, use tax, FICA, heavy use tax, W2, and 1099 forms.
- Assists the Manager of Finance in the strategic initiative and long-term planning through the completion of cost-of-service studies, annual budgets, long-range financial planning, and the completion of strategic objectives.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities required for this position:
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and have strong basic math skills.
- Must possess knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices. This should include a working knowledge of record keeping, report preparation, and bookkeeping practices.
- Must possess strong organizational skills, allocate time effectively, and handle multiple demands and competing priorities with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Must be able to solve practical problems where limited data exists, interpret a variety of instructions or data, and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Must be proficient with a computer and have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word & Excel programs.
- Must successfully complete RUS Uniform System of Accounts Course, RUS Work Order Procedures Course and NISC Accounting Business Systems courses within a reasonable amount of time.
- Sets high standards of performance, demonstrates sound business ethics and maintains confidentiality.
- Ability to build rapport, and present a positive attitude toward external customers and internal customers.
- Ability and willingness to take on additional tasks and responsibilities as necessary.
Preferred, but not required:
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, math, or a related field is preferred. Significant work experience in a related accounting or finance field may be substituted for all or portion of the advanced education requirements.
