Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician (“MLT”) is responsible for sustaining an effective support structure for the laboratory functions in a clinical setting of Boone Memorial Hospital, Inc. (“BMH”), by providing optimal, safe, and effective care to patients utilizing the hospital policies and procedures. The MLT will obtain and prepare specimens for analysis and perform various screening tests as well as assist with other related activities involved in providing patient care in compliance with hospital standards, as well as federal, state, and local government regulations.

The Medical Laboratory Technician is expected to perform the following essential functions:
- Responsible for collecting, via venipunctures or finger stick, labeling, processing, and distributing specimens as required.
- Perform routine tests as designated by the supervisor, in each area of the lab, including: Blood bank, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, serology, urinalysis parasitology, and miscellaneous.
- Collect arterial blood gases.
- Ensure that all established quality control criteria are met.
- Recognize and prevent malfunction of instruments and equipment, performing maintenance as necessary.
- Perform EKG testing.
- Recognize problems, identifies the causes, determines solutions, and takes corrective action as appropriate.
- Ability to take initiative in completing all work and duties that are to be done from day to day in the lab.
- Ability to orientate new employees and demonstrate procedures for students.
- Assist in calibration of instruments.
- Conduct lab inventory.
- Ability to write procedures.
- Ability to perform specific tasks necessary for maintaining quality testing in the lab.
- Maintain neat, orderly and well-stocked work area.
- Comply with hospital policy, state and federal regulations.
- Display proper respect to supervisory personnel and fellow workers.
- Attend in-service education and meetings as offered.
- Other duties as may be assigned.

Physical demands
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times
Travel required
- None expected.
Required education and experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Associate of Applied Science (or related field) for Medical Laboratory Technician.
- Valid MTL/MT license through the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Office of Laboratory Services (Preferred).
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) (Preferred)
Preferred education and experience
- Clinical Laboratory Experience: 1 year (Preferred)
