Summary
The Respiratory Therapist (RT) is responsible for sustaining an effective support structure for the respiratory functions in an inpatient hospital setting of Boone Memorial Hospital, Inc. (BMH), by performing cardiopulmonary evaluation, respiratory therapy treatment techniques, and education of patients, staff, family, and caregivers under supervision of a physician. The RT will perform routine technical respiratory duties and assist with other related activities involved in providing patient care in compliance with hospital standards, as well as federal, state, and local government regulations
Essential Functions

The RT, under the supervision of a licensed medical provider, is expected to perform the following essential functions:
- Set up, operate, and maintain various types of oxygen and other therapeutic gas and mist inhalation equipment- air compressors, oxygen tanks, oxygen analyzers, various oxygen mask and nasal cannulas.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Administer various forms of therapy- Acapella or Flutter Valve therapy, aerosol therapy, postural drainage and percussion, IPV, and incentive spirometry.
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
- Perform electrocardiograms.
- Patient charting - Electronic Health Records.
- Prepare and gathers information for patient charges.
- Airway care.
- Care and cleaning of equipment.
- Arterial blood gases- drawing.
- Pulmonary function testing.
- Six-Minute walk test.
- Preparation and administration of BiPAP/CPAP therapy.
- Complete all other task as assigned by manager/director.
- Participate in quality assurances.
- Assist with finger sticks via glucometer.
- Respond to emergencies as required.
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient ranging from neonate to geriatric.
- Maintain established department and hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, infection and hazardous material control.
- Adhere to the standards of behavior as presented in the BMH Policy and Procedures.

- Mechanical Ventilation.

- Home Sleep Study.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Physical demands
- Ability to perform various motor skills such as; standing and/or sitting for long periods of time, walking, lifting (up to 50 pounds) using proper lifting techniques, stair climbing, reaching, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, squatting, grasping, keyboarding, and arm-hand coordination on a continuous basis.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must have ability to hear low and high pitch sounds.

Required education and experience
- Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy from a college or university accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) which was formerly the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA), Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and American Medical Association (AMA).
- Credentials as a respiratory therapist, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is required.
- Valid license through West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care.
Preferred education and experience
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support
- Direct patient care experience of six (6) months
- Cardiopulmonary experience of six (6) months
