The Mission
Boots2Roots is seeking a dynamic, people-oriented, mission-focused leader to serve as a Military Transition Specialist.
Boots2Roots provides personalized and proactive services for active-duty military members, veterans and their families transitioning from active-duty to living and working in Maine. Boots2Roots provides proactive, personalized preparation and networking enabling our “Teammates” to quickly find meaningful work and integrate into Maine communities.
Boots2Roots is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was incorporated in 2016, serves all communities of Maine, and is headquartered in Portland, Maine.
Boots2Roots’ Goals:
1) To assist active-duty servicemembers, Veterans and spouses find meaningful employment within 60 days of arriving in Maine.
2) That transitioning military members will remain in their first post-military job for at least one year.
3) That Maine employers will have a growing pipeline of workforce talent and that transitioning military members become an important contributor to Maine’s workforce development efforts.
Results:
In six years, Boots2Roots has provided services to over 372 Teammates (servicemembers, Veterans and spouses) while providing new workforce talent to over 100 employers. 93% of Teammates were hired within two months of arriving in Maine, and 94% have remained in their first civilian job for more than a year.
Your Opportunity
As a Military Transition Specialist, you will lead transition coaching, resume coaching and interview coaching for military members and their families relocating to Maine. The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills, is an expert communicator and has relatable military and/or civilian work experience. The Military Transition Specialist reports directly to the Program Director (PD).
Job Description
The Military Transition Specialist is responsible for coaching Teammates (active-duty military, Veterans and spouses) through the transition process to meaningful work in Maine. This includes coordinating and administering self-assessments, resume assistance, interview preparation, community integration, networking with potential employers, and peer mentoring. Meeting Boots2Roots’ goals and achieving best outcomes for Teammates are your measurements for success.
Responsibilities
The Military Transition Specialist responsibilities include:
- Primary point of contact for Teammates with Boots2Roots
- Resume coaching and interview coaching
- Interpreting military experience for civilian resumes, job applications and interviews
- Providing mentorship for transitioning military members moving to Maine
- Connecting Teammates with local transition services (veterans reps, realtor, bank etc…)
- Coordinating with the Program Director to ensure best Teammate outcomes and meeting Boots2Roots’ program goals
- Coordinating with the Boots2Roots team of staff and volunteers to meet Teammate desired outcomes
Required Skills
While possessing dedication to the Boots2Roots mission and team, the ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
- Exceptional interpersonal skills- relationship building is a key part of this job
- Exceptional written communication skills
- Experience with performance appraisals (military or civilian) and editing resumes (preferred)
- Experience with military transitions and civilian job search
- Comfortable working with minimal supervision
- Comfortable communicating by phone and digital/virtual platforms
- Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft office suite
Required Education and Experience
- Be a veteran of the active-duty component of the U.S. Armed Forces or spouse
- Undergraduate degree preferred (or experience in resume writing)
- Have completed at least one post-military job successfully (preferred)
Compensation and benefits:
- This is a part-time job to start with 16-30 hours of work anticipated each week
- There is an opportunity for this to grow into a full-time position
- Flexible work schedule with both in-person and remote work
- Competitive non-profit salary ($22-$30/hr depending on experience)
