Job purpose
The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos and fan drives for the automotive industry. The Arden campus offers a multitude of career opportunities and is in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. This position will perform system layout, hardware selection, integration, and testing of system electrical hardware. System and module development with validation leading to system integration industrial OEM applications meeting appropriate market requirements for functionality, durability, reliability, and cost.
Key responsibilities
- Lead electrical and electronics systems hardware architecture, topology definition
- Support the system design and integration of high-power components
- Lead electrical product design, including modeling/simulation, key component selection, schematic capture, PCB support, thermal design, regulatory and compliance considerations for UL/CE
- Diagnose problems or malfunctions within electrical systems and recommending solutions
- Design cabling for electronics and power interconnections, selecting the appropriate materials and referencing the standards necessary to assure compliance.
- Direct and execute the collaboration with internal and external engineers to define and implement firmware, communication networks, electrical schematics and layout
- Supervise and develop documentation in accordance with internal and external electrical standards for certification requirements.
- Lead robust DFMEA, and DVP&R development processes for electrical components.
- Product supervision in the lab during prototype builds, test, troubleshoot, or teardown throughout the product development and validation
- Support the manufacturing teams during industrialization of the products leading to production
- Work with supply chain personnel to develop and evaluate external vendors, and to identify alternative parts in support of supply issues and obsolescence concerns.
- Supervise and advise 3rd party contractors on builds
What we’re looking for
Required:
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or Industrial Engineering with 7 years development, validation, or test experience with industrial electrical design.
- Fundamentally sound electrical engineering knowledge with the ability to adapt to new environments.
- Self-starter that can lead projects with minimal oversight.
- Knowledge of AC motors & VFD drives, control system fundamentals, and wiring systems.
- Strong knowledge of industry safety standards and government regulatory specifications for electrical systems.
- Knowledge of CAN, ModBus, TCP/IP communication protocol
- Understanding of 480VAC/800VDC voltage functional safety
- Familiarity with electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and multimeters as well as a basic understanding of electrical safety.
- Appreciation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design methods and validation testing.
- Working knowledge of automotive and industrial sensing/feedback systems.
- Understanding of industrial pumps, fans, monitoring and safety systems.
- Project Management skills including the ability to demonstrate logical analysis and clear communication.
- Ability to coordinate engineering development with individuals in multiple locations / time zones.
- Ability to manage suppliers and external resources when procuring development hardware or developing new processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to coordinate testing.
- Background in product design, development, validation, and testing.
- Ability to work on project teams as the key technical representative and possesses good communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft office products — Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
- Experience writing technical statements of work (SOW).
Preferred:
- MSEE with 5 years design and development experience or 5 years of industrial electrical engineering
- Understanding of the challenges of applying electronic components to harsh applications, principal failure modes, means to mitigate these, and the methods for validation.
- Power electronics, high speed electric machines and distributed power networks.
- Six Sigma and Functional Safety experience
