PUBLIC WORKS LABORER FOR SANITATION DEPARTMENT
REPORTS TO: PUBLIC WORKS SUPERVISOR

WORK OBJECTIVE:
Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance tasks related to the Borough infrastructure, parks, facilities, and buildings involving the operation of vehicles, equipment, and tools. The Public works laborer is primarily responsible for trash, recycling and yard waste pick up on a weekly basis. Work is performed under close supervision with minimal latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. - Performs trash, recycling, and yard waste pick, including bulk – up several times a week.
- Performs basic streets and drainage maintenance and repair tasks; learns to patch and fill asphalt; inspect, clear, and repair gates and outfalls.
- Performs basic maintenance tasks associated with grounds to include collection and disposal of debris and litter; mowing, trimming and edging grounds; cleaning/clearing ditches, drains, and culverts; and maintaining signage, striping, and markings
- Assists with general buildings and facilities maintenance tasks in and around public facility structures (i.e. cleaning, painting, repairing, replenishing supplies, setting up for programs and events, arranging equipment and furniture, etc.)
- Assists in conducting routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment; troubleshoots issues (on the job training provided)
- Reports equipment malfunctions, facility maintenance needs, and real or potential safety hazards to immediate supervisor
- Operates equipment and mechanical tools and performs routine maintenance to ensure proper operating condition to include cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and monitoring fluid levels
- Responds to and assists in emergency situations (i.e. winter storms (snow/ice), summer storms (flooding/wind), etc.)
- Ensures that all areas are clean and free of anything that would constitute a safety hazard
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety standards
- May operate specialized vehicles and/or equipment based on assignment area
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR EXPERINCE PREFERRED
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one or more years’ experience in a least one of the functional maintenance areas outlined herein; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience. Applicants with Pennsylvania commercial driver’s license Class A will be given preference.
In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed above, an individual must be able to perform each of the established essential functions in order to perform this job successfully.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Basic knowledge of general maintenance tasks and procedures
- Basic knowledge of ground maintenance and installation
- Skill in the operation of tools and equipment necessary to perform duties or ability to learn
- Skill in adapting to a changing work environment, competing demands and ability to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events
- Skill in working independently and following through with assignments with minimal supervision
- Ability to assess site conditions, recognize current and potential safety hazards, and proceed with tasks in a manner to protect personal, staff, and life safety
- Ability to perform manual labor under adverse weather conditions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects or materials (up to 80 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks require sound and visual perception and discrimination. Tasks require oral communications ability.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Pass a pre-employment drug test
- Reside within 15 miles of the Borough

Pay: $19.25 - $19.75 per hour
