This position will be Hybrid in the office/market 3 days per week, and those days can be flexible in consultation with your manager.

The Boston Business Journal is looking for a driven and innovative reporter to build on the newsroom’s strong legacy of using data to drive essential, exclusive business coverage and to quarterback special projects.

The projects reporter is a great opportunity for a journalist who enjoys many hats: One day gathering and analyzing original data on the industries, companies and trends driving business decisions in the Boston region, the next day assisting in the collection, reporting and writing of articles for exclusive Business Journal research publications such as Fast 50, Best Places to Work, 40 Under 40 and more. The ideal candidate has the intellectual curiosity necessary to find, analyze, understand and explain what’s driving the Greater Boston economy using databases, documents and interviews with local sources.

  • Regularly reports and writes articles highlighting exclusive Business Journal research, including weekly “List Extra” analysis
  • Collects and analyzes company and industry data for exclusive research projects using appropriate narrative and visual storytelling techniques
  • Oversees creation of charts and infographics to illustrate research data findings
  • Works alongside reporters and editors on enterprise projects
  • Helps manage the coordination and planning of nomination-driven special sections and reports.
  • Actively looks for creative ways to tell important stories using data
  • Reports and writes general assignment stories as needed; may be assigned a beat or area of coverage not being covered by current staff for occasional stories
  • Reports and writes cover stories for our print edition where appropriate

  • Three to five years of journalism experience preferred
  • Proven experience building and maintaining a strong source base
  • Strong news judgment, news analysis and news writing
  • Knowledge of computer data-management applications
  • Proven ability to work with databases and spreadsheets to find patterns and stories
  • Meticulous eye for detail
  • Passionate about telling stories through data
  • Able to get people to tell you things they don’t want to
  • Solid Microsoft Excel skills a must
  • Able to mine and analyze data from surveys, regulatory agencies, other public documents and sources
  • Able to work as part of a team and enjoy shared success
