What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hematotherapy RN position at Boston Childrens Health Physicians LLP?
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Hematotherapy registered nurse coordinates and provides transfusion, infusion, cellular therapy collection and apheresis processes for pediatric and adult patient populations. The nurse communicates with physicians, nurses, family members and donor/patients in relation to hematotherapy activities.
Salary and Schedule
- 4 Day – 35 hour weekly schedule
- Salary approx. $100,000-$115,000, negotiable depending on experience. Full Time with Benefits, 401k, PTO
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Donor Center Procedures:
- Identifies and documents physiologic and psychosocial needs and care of the donor/patient.
- Performs and documents donor/patient registration, screening and history
- Performs phlebotomies for blood collection and therapeutic procedures
- Performs Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Collection (HPC) of healthy donors
- Performs therapeutic HPC collections, extracorporeal photopheresis, plasmapheresis and cytapheresis on patients
- Performs donor/patient care activities including vascular access, specimen collection medication administration, nursing procedures, and documentation of all assessments, interventions and responses
- Monitor progress of critically ill patients, communicate changing status to physicians, request physician assessment of deteriorating patient status, and facilitate hospital admission when necessary. Direct emergency situations and maintain current certification requirements.
- Participates in the writing of procedure manuals
- Provides leadership and may take call as required.
- Technical Procedures:
- Uses specific mechanical and technical equipment proficiently and safely
- Performs and documents component preparation
- Performs calibrations and follows quality control protocols to ascertain accuracy of results
- Performs simple to complex trouble- shooting activities according to established guidelines
- Performs and documents preventive maintenance and function checks for such equipment
- Recognizes critical or significant finds and follows up according to established protocols
Education and Training of others:
- Provides and reinforces donor/patient education
- Provides in-service and/or educational material to hospital staff
- Participates in Instruction of new employees in the processes of cell therapy collections, ECP, therapeutic apheresis and transfusion/infusion procedures

- Analytical and procedural instrumentation.
- Computer, telephone system, copy machine, fax, paper shredder, calculator, and various standard office equipment and/or machines.

- Patient files, insurance and/or financial information.
WORKING CONDITIONS - PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- May be required to bend, reach or lift in excess of ten pounds.
- Responsiveness to auditory alarms and communication devices including: telephones, beepers, fire alarms, mechanical failure alarms
- Visual acuity acceptable for performing duties of this position
- Sufficient mobility to access equipment, patients and other customers
- Daily functions may include incidental exposure to hazards associated with automation, chemicals, microscopic work, and patient specimens, microorganisms, phlebotomy equipment and sharps
- Certain incidental functions may require use of protective gear such as face shields, gloves, and fluid resistant coats.
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a medical facility.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required Education:
- Registered Nurse Degree from an accredited school.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school: Experience in Apheresis, Cellular therapy, Transfusion/Infusion processes
Minimum experience required:
- 3 yrs Nursing Experience; IV insertion skills; Strong customer service and communication skills
Preferred:
- APHON/ ONS Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certification
License, Registration or Certification Required:
- NY RN License, BLS, ACLS, and PALS Certification
