As an R&D Repair Technical Specialist at Boston Dynamics, you will be a crucial part of a small, fast-moving robotics team, leading the repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting efforts for our advanced robotic systems, with a strong emphasis on complex electrical systems. You will provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and drive continuous improvement in our repair processes. This role involves hands-on work on prototype electrical system designs, dense electromechanical integrations, and lab building and debugging, ranging from small test systems to fully integrated prototype robots. You must be able to work quickly, adapt to evolving technical challenges, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Day-to-Day Activities
- Lead and execute the repair and maintenance of complex prototype electromechanical sub-assemblies, including computers, power distribution systems, sensors, embedded data acquisition systems, prototype lithium battery packs, and embedded processors for robotic systems.
- Troubleshoot and identify root causes of electrical system failures in sub-assemblies and complete robots.
- Create repair runbooks and procedures with minimal engineering guidance. Identify detailed electrical issues and recommend corrective actions to design engineers.
- Iterate and improve upon prototype designs in collaboration with design engineers to progress designs from initial prototype toward reproducible assemblies with good quality control.
- Plan repair equipment, work spaces, and project timelines in coordination with managers and engineers to ensure the environment and equipment necessary to accomplish project goals related to creation and timely repair of prototype robots.
- Lead the technical aspects of repair projects by offering guidance and support to the team. Facilitate the resolution of challenges by addressing knowledge gaps, providing timely answers to pressing questions, and establishing or optimizing processes to enhance operational efficiency.
- Collaborate closely with the Manager / Technical Program / Project Manager to define project goals, scope, and requirements. Develop comprehensive work schedules that ensure team members are aligned and aware of their responsibilities and timelines.
- Foster clear communication among team members, other technical leads, and management. Actively ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding project objectives and expectations, which contributes to maintaining high standards for project completion.
- Proactively assess potential technical risks that could impact project timelines or outcomes. Develop and implement contingency plans to address these risks promptly. If issues escalate beyond your control, effectively communicate them to management for further action.
- Regularly evaluate current operations to identify areas for improvement. Organize and facilitate training sessions and meetings where team members can collaboratively discuss feedback and innovative ideas for enhancing processes.
- Cultivate a culture of creativity and advancement within the team. Advocate for the exploration and adoption of new tools, technologies, and methodologies that can drive efficiency and effectiveness in project execution.
