Overview of Program:
The BPS Department of Expanded Learning and Opportunities is thrilled to announce the return of Acceleration Academy programming for February and April 2025. We are seeking enthusiastic and highly effective teachers who will commit themselves to accelerating student learning through personalized instruction during school vacation weeks. This is a valuable opportunity for motivated educators to work with small groups of selected students to dive deep into engaging, rigorous, standards-aligned lessons that reconnect students to a love of learning and help narrow persistent achievement gaps.
The overall goal of the Boston Public Schools Acceleration Academy is to provide students with an opportunity to build academic and social emotional skills through a holistic programming model that includes 20 hours of targeted small group instruction in ELA (February) and/or Math (April) as well as enrichment activities designed to extend the academic concepts being taught in core classes. Acceleration Academies work to accelerate learning for students by providing a focused, nurturing environment during school breaks where they can receive personalized instruction, develop key academic skills, and engage in enrichment activities that enhance their overall well-being.
The February Acceleration Academy will take place February 17-20, 2025 and will serve students who are identified as needing additional support to meet standards in ELA. Students will participate in approximately 26 hours of programming that includes 20 hours of standards-aligned lessons in ELA as well as daily enrichment classes, breakfast, and lunch. Specific daily schedules will vary by school.
All qualified educators are welcome to apply; however, preference will be given to educators currently working at one of the selected schools. Additionally, if your home-based school is identified as an Accelerated Academy, you will also receive preference for placement within that school.
Selected Schools: Young Achievers K-8 School, Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, Charlestown High School, Ellis Elementary School, Blackstone Elementary School, Greenwood Sarah K-8 School, Shaw-Taylor Elementary School
Site Coordinator Responsibilities:
- Oversee Acceleration Academy planning and programming.
- Supervise academic and enrichment teachers, paraprofessionals and all program personnel. ‘
- Oversee operational management for programming during the 4-day acceleration program, February 17-20, 2025.
- Work closely with BPS Central and Teachers to execute Acceleration Academy goals set forth by BPS academic and professional learning leaders and your school’s principal.
- Serve as an instructional leader and supervise teachers in planning, delivering and evaluating theme-based lessons focused on content specific standards.
- Work with your school’s instructional leadership team to recruit and oversee selected student registration and engagement efforts; Student lists must be submitted on time and allotted seats must be filled.
- In coordination with your school’s instructional leadership team, create class rosters and assign teachers to appropriate grade levels.
- Work with BPS Central and your school’s principal to coordinate and order materials and attendance incentives.
- Oversee the submission of pre-program deliverables.
- Oversee operational budget.
- Participate in mandatory professional learning and a series of district-led coordinator meetings to execute operational and academic program goals.
- Communicate with teachers and conduct staff meetings before the Acceleration Academy week to provide schedules, materials and ensure coordinated projects and lessons.
- Work with enrichment and classroom teachers to thoughtfully integrate academics and enrichment to address the targeted instructional standards for each grade level
- Prepare classroom and instructional materials prior to Acceleration Academy start date so academic structures and routines begin on the first day of acceleration programming.
- Play a significant role in family outreach and communication; including making phone calls, sending letters and incentivizing students in order to recruit and maintain high participation rates.
- Ensure 80% or higher daily attendance by conducting daily outreach to families if students do not attend and organizing a plan of action to get students to programming
- Collect evaluative student work and projects and record student performance as guided. Submit end of program deliverables.
- Participate in feedback/debrief activities including filling out an end of program survey.
- Oversee program logistical duties such as arrival, dismissal and cafeteria duty. This includes working with the FNS, transportation, ODA and all related departments to ensure programs operate smoothly.
- Oversee site policies and student discipline code
- Coordinate with food services/cafeteria staff for meal delivery
- Coordinate with the custodial staff
- Spearhead emergency protocol response (fire alarms, etc.)
- Track time of BPS teachers, complete time reporting forms and submissions for payroll
Required Qualifications:
- Highly qualified teacher; Relevant DESE certification
- Has participated in required 12 hour inclusion PD
- Skilled in leadership and project management
- Instructional coaching experience
- Demonstrated effective family engagement skills and familiarity with school population
- At least three years of professional teaching experience
- Experience teaching Students with Disabilities
- Experience teaching students who are English Learners
- Experience with developing & implementing project-based curriculum
- Current authorization to work in the United States
- Priority will be given to BTU members currently employed at the selected program site
- Dedication and commitment to Expanded Learning Opportunities and making the Acceleration Academies a highly effective and meaningful experience for students.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Multilingual
- ESL certified
- Special Education certified
- Current assignment in a relevant leadership position
- Master’s Degree in related field
- Previous experience successfully coordinating expanded learning programs for the district
COMPENSATION: Stipend - $65 per hour worked, up to 52 hours
- 32 program hours (includes flexibility for early drop off/late pickup)
- 10 hours of DESE/District provided professional development and required meetings (week of Jan. 13th)
- 20 hours of planning and preparation time
