REPORTS TO: BPS Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) and Office of Multilingual Multicultural Education (OMME)

When you are hired to work at the 5th Quarter Summer Learning program, you are committing to the entire duration of the program. This means that your assignment may involve working at different sites, as staffing needs arise. Flexibility in location is an essential requirement of the position, should you be the successful candidate for this position and accept the job offer, you agree to be available for reassignment to various sites as needed throughout the program.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The '5th Quarter' program aims to provide equitable access to high-quality academic and enrichment opportunities for students across Boston, utilizing the city's resources as an extended classroom. The program is designed to offer students an enriching and engaging summer experience that fosters increased school engagement, positive social, emotional, and academic growth, stronger relationships with peers and adults, and enhanced college and career readiness.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

Dates: between July 8th-August 8th

Hours: 4 hours/day for 20 days of programming

The in-person instructional hours for students in 5th Quarter sites may vary slightly by program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The 5th Quarter High School Credit Recovery/Middle School Course Recovery ESL Site Coordinator is responsible for planning, supervising and implementing this holistic model of summer learning and ensuring the program is inclusive to all students and families. The ESL Site Coordinator will be responsible for managing and supporting staff, managing external community partners, program scheduling, room assignments, overseeing daily operations, addressing medical, behavioral, and other student needs, planning community events and field trips, and all other responsibilities pertaining to overseeing a complex, multifaceted summer program. ESL Site Coordinators will also be required to work prior to program launch in order to support program planning, teacher and student outreach, roster management, and other pre-program operations as needed.

ESL Site Coordinators must be available to participate in planning and preparation activities immediately upon hiring.

Pre-Program Responsibilities (April - June)

  • Participate in regular meetings with the 5th Quarter Operations team
  • Participate in hiring qualified teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff
  • Prepare and manage curriculum materials, including pre-program setup and materials inventory.
  • Plan and facilitate staff professional learning experiences relevant to program implementation.
  • Provide regular communication to families regarding program activities and requirements.
  • Enhance recruitment and enrollment efforts to meet the desired number of students, with a focus on recruiting BPS multilingual learners across ELD levels 1-5.
  • Manage summer program schedules and rosters for all staff and partners.

Summer Program Responsibilities (July - August)

  • Coordinate daily program logistics, including meal distribution, facilities use, transportation, technology, nursing, and custodial services.
  • Manage student data systems such as attendance and schedules, ensuring timely and accurate daily reporting.
  • Track work hours of OMME-hired teachers and paraprofessionals, complete time reporting forms for payroll, and arrange for coverage in case of staff absence.
  • Support high-quality instruction by facilitating professional development and curriculum planning sessions, modeling instructional practices, observing instruction, and providing feedback.
  • Supervise the administration of summer district-wide assessments and use data-driven instruction.
  • Review lesson plans and implement ‘best practice’ instructional strategies for multilingual learners.
  • Engage and communicate with families as partners in planning and problem-solving.
  • Serve as the Summer School’s liaison with the Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education (OMME).
  • Understand and implement culturally and linguistically sustaining practices.
  • Establish a culturally competent, trauma-sensitive learning climate.
  • Execute and enforce program policies in alignment with the BPS student discipline code.
  • Coordinate emergency response procedures in the event of an emergency.
  • Collaborate with BPS, Boston Afterschool and Beyond (BASB), NIOST, and other evaluators to implement evaluation tools.
  • Complete “wrap-up” duties, including end-of-summer closeout paperwork and feedback activities.
  • Demonstrate completion of other critical tasks and duties as requested by the Office of Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) and Office of Multilingual Multicultural Education (OMME).

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Massachusetts teaching license or school administrator license.
  • At least 1 year of professional teaching or administrative experience
  • Willing to facilitate academic growth through engaging, project-based curriculum
  • Willing to work in close collaboration with community-based organizations as needed to meet shared goals in a student-centered, school-aligned, results-focused initiative.
  • Competency with relevant technology platforms, including but not limited to Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Aspen, SchoolMint, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a visionary instructional leader with the capacity to coach and supervise educators, provide constructive feedback, and foster collaboration.
  • Experience with working with a diverse population of students, especially historically marginalized student groups such as economically disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners.
  • A fierce commitment to equity
  • An understanding and commitment to the implementation of the district’s Culturally and Linguistically Sustaining Practices (CLSP) framework.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:

  • Current teacher or administrator in the Boston Public Schools.
  • Prior experience working in a BPS summer learning program and/or in close collaboration with a community-based organization
  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.

TERMS:

  • Hourly rate of $57/hr for direct instructional time and $40/hr for professional development and prep. Anticipated total of 100 hours including professional development, on-site program time, and additional duties, for an estimated total amount of up to $5360.
  • The individual who is hired to this position agrees to the 2025 BPS Summer Employment Terms.
  • Please be advised that pursuant to Massachusetts and Federal law, BPS considers site coordinators to be professional employees (or exempt employees), and they are expected to work as long as necessary to complete the required work.
  • The individual who is hired to this position consents to electronic sign-in procedures on site, that is retained by BPS exclusively for audit and sign-in verification (payroll).
  • BASAS Members must complete all required S6500 days by the end of the school year to be eligible for this role.
  • Job offers are conditional and based on sufficient student enrollment/attendance.
