Job Description:
- The Phlebotomist collects blood specimens (capillary and venipuncture) from patients of all ages, assists patients with non-blood collections, and is responsible for ensuring specimen integrity through the accuracy of patient identification, specimen labeling, collection steps, and specimen transport. This position performs occasional point-of-care patient testing, such as glucose. The phlebotomist provides exceptional customer service.
- Performs patient identification and specimen labeling by standard operating procedures.
- Understands the phlebotomy processes and techniques to obtain quality blood specimens to ensure that correct decisions are made regarding specimen collection.
- Performs, interprets, and reports point-of-care testing (e.g., glucose) and quality control.
- Processes laboratory and patient reports according to standard operating procedure, e.g., printing, recording, distributing, faxing, filing, and retrieving.
- Recognizes problems, takes appropriate action, documents problems and corrective action, and follows protocol to notify the Supervisor of problems promptly so as not to jeopardize patient care.
- Actively communicates throughout the shift and manages priority requests in a courteous and timely manner to ensure effective department workflow. Follows up with STAT, ASAP, and Pre-op draws to ensure turnaround times are met.
- Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
Additional specialty certification/training as preferred by the work area:
- Emergency Department: Basic Life Support (BLS) prior to start date.
