About the position
The Boston Teacher Residency (BTR) Literacy Coach will be responsible for teaching elementary literacy content methods: Intro to Elementary Literacy Content Methods (Summer), Foundations of Reading Development (Semester 1), and Teaching Writing in the Elementary Classroom (Semester 2). Coursework addresses both research and theory on literacy development in the elementary grades and the application of evidence-based practices to the classroom. The Elementary Literacy Coach is also responsible for coaching residents in elementary literacy, ensuring that all novices develop the knowledge and skills required to be effective teachers capable of driving significant learning and achievement for all students. The BTR Literacy Coach reports to the BTR Director.
About BPE
Boston Plan for Excellence (BPE) operates a PreK-12 pathway of neighborhood-based Teaching Academies -- schools that provide a world-class education for all students while preparing outstanding new teachers for successful, sustainable careers as urban educators. We run two Teaching Academies in the Dudley neighborhood of Roxbury: Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School and Dearborn STEM Academy. Through Boston Teacher Residency, a nationally recognized and replicated clinical model for training teachers, we prepare aspiring educators for the Boston Public Schools and run a city-wide teacher support network.
Key Responsibilities
-Plans and teaches the year-long Elementary Literacy Methods course, including week-long summer courses focusing on introduction to content, pedagogy, and preparation for residents' active roles in the literacy classroom, and a week-long literacy unit course in March
-Provides regular coaching cycles with residents to improve their practice (with an emphasis on brief, targeted, digestible feedback)
-Provides weekly coaching cycles to individual residents (anticipated 4-5 coaching cycles per week)
-Coordinates and facilitates the learning of BTR residents in elementary literacy
-Designs and leads resident learning time to ensure that learning is aligned with and complements the schools’ academic model/student learning needs
-Facilitates the development of content-specific knowledge and skill through a combination of coursework, 'flex-time,' learning sites, rounds, common planning time, differentiated professional development
-Develops residents’ capacity to track student learning, analyze student work/data, and make instructional adjustments to practice
-Serves as a resource to the BTR Director in the planning and delivery of training to develop the skill and capacity of Collaborating Teachers (CTs)
-Facilitates fall and spring performance assessment process designed to collect evidence of residents’ proficiency in meeting indicator/standards expectations on the BTR rubric over time
-Attends and co-facilitates BPE, BTR, Sacred Meeting Times, CT PD, and Instructor meetings to strengthen the continued improvement of our program and collaboration with colleagues across the program
Qualifications
-Demonstrated proficiency as a teacher and instructional coach
-Demonstrated knowledge of effective instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessment and diagnosis.
-Deep understanding of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and the ELA Common Core Standards
-Experience in designing and leading literacy professional development
-Experience supporting the growth of other adults, including supporting or coaching novice and veteran teachers
-Strong and tested ability to participate effectively on teams
-Proven ability to prioritize, balance, and complete complex projects in the face of competing deadlines
-Demonstrated passion for and commitment to the BPE mission and educational model
Compensation
The salary range for a 0.5 FTE BPE Coach position is $50,000 - $55,000, prorated from $100,000 - $110,000 for 1.0.
Location
BPE’s office is located in Roxbury, MA. This position requires travel to various Boston Public Schools.
