The Newborn Nursery Medical Director (NMD) works collaboratively and in partnership with the Chair / Chief, Administrative Director, Nursing Director, Nurse Manager and Case Managers, ACMO for Inpatient Operations, Central Flow Unit, CMO and CNO to oversee the overall clinical operations of the Newborn Nursery. The NMD collaborates with the Chair / Chief, faculty, residency program, and BMC administration to improve performance in each of the six IOM quality domains - timeliness, safety, equity, efficiency, effectiveness, and patient centered care.

As part of this role, the NMD strives to build cooperative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. It is expected that the NMD will, in conjunction with nursing leadership, provide oversight of the inpatient services and will support the strategic plan and goals of Boston Medical Center, the department / section, and BU Medical Group.

The NMD will be evaluated by the Chair / Chief (or designee) and administrative director and BMC inpatient leadership, using performance metrics established annually, with input from faculty, BMC operational and nursing leadership.

Required Skills

Qualifications and Education

  • Employed by BUMG with clinical privileges at Boston Medical Center and a faculty appointment at BUSM
  • Board Certified or Eligible
  • Minimum of three years of clinical experience
  • Minimum clinical effort of 5 weeks of nursery per year
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills
  • Demonstrated strength in collaboration and interdisciplinary commitment
  • Professional leadership experience and / or formal education / training preferred (e.g., MPH, MPP, MBA, and / or similar health care management degree)

Roles and Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

  • Provides oversight for day-to-day inpatient operations of the Newborn Nursery faculty
  • Develops, reviews, and recommends clinical protocols / practice guidelines that impact care of hospitalized patients on the inpatient units.
  • Responsible for continuous development, improvement, and implementation of clinical programs in the Newborn Nursery
  • Reviews departmental / section and unit-based quality outcomes. Works with leadership to improve patient safety and quality of patient care units
  • Reviews and analyzes physician / unit / team scorecards using quality, length of stay, discharge time, readmission and other quality metrics as agreed between the department / section, BUMG and the hospital
  • Supervises team in facilitating difficult disposition conversations, when there is lack of alignment on the discharge plan
  • Ensures that multi-disciplinary rounds are timely and effective
  • Operations and Administrative Leadership

  • Organizes and runs the monthly newborn nursery division meetings
  • Participates regularly in appropriate administrative meetings including, but not limited to :
  • o Department or Section staff meetings

    o Monthly Inpatient Medical Directors meeting

    o Unit based triad meetings

    o Other committees or meetings related to inpatient practice.

  • Provides medical expertise in the operation of approved quality improvement and utilization management programs in accordance with regulatory, state, corporate, and accreditation requirements
  • Identifies clinical quality improvement opportunities to improve the quality and cost of care
  • Collects and communicates clinician satisfaction with inpatient care processes
  • Responsible for participating in annual inpatient hospital goal setting process and designing programs to achieve goals across length of stay, readmissions, discharge time and quality of care
  • Participates in professional development programs
  • Educational Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the needs and requirements of UME and GME programs are met
  • Collaborates with central GME and the DIO and department educational leaders to ensure appropriate integration and oversight of trainees (student, residents and fellows) assigned to the units.
  • Establishes protocols that articulate the roles and responsibilities of trainees on the units
