Overview
The Health Information Management (HIM) Release of Information Specialist responds to and tracks internal and external requests for patient information. The position utilizes Federal and State laws covering Health Information, as well as hospital policies and procedures regarding verification of authenticity of these requests.
The HIM Release of Information Specialist reports directly to the Director of Health Information Management.
Responsibilities
1. Receives and responds to internal and external requests for Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. Authenticates validity of external requests and responds to all valid and invalid requests within 30 days of receipt.
2. Maintains tracking of all external requests for information.
3. Creates copies necessary to fulfill valid requests for PHI May replace defective parts or make repairs to hearing amplification systems brought in by individuals.
4. Coordinates information with the Director for patient’s requests to amend patient health information in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
5. Records receipt of payment for medical records. Produces monthly report of receipts.
6. Reviews patient medical records and other resources, as needed, to obtain required birth information.
7. Acts as a Receptionist for the department.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
1. Education: a.) High School diploma or equivalent. b.) Completion of a two-year Medical Office personnel program (preferred).
2. Licensure/Certification: a.) None required.
3. Work Experience: a.) Medical Office experience and working knowledge of HIPAA Privacy Rules.
