Boulder County Public Works Department is seeking to hire two (2) Civil Engineering Summer Interns to join our team for a hands-on learning experience in both field and office environments. This internship provides valuable technical training, professional mentoring, and engineering experience while working on multimodal transportation projects. Interns will collaborate with engineering staff to learn valuable skillsets and get real-world exposure to a variety of civil engineering practices.

This is an hourly, non-benefited position that will work 40 hours per week Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm. This is primarily an in-person internship, with the possibility of remote work based on the needs of specific tasks. It’s preferred that this internship start after school ends in the Spring and conclude before school begins in the Fall. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime).

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Hiring Salary Range: $28.00 Hourly 

Tentative Hiring Timeline:

  1.  Collect, process, analyze, and report multimodal traffic data in support of projects and programs
  2.  Collect and analyze traffic related infrastructure data using asset management tools
  3.  Assist engineers with signal timing and the operation of traffic signals, school zone flashing beacons, and radar speed display signs
  4.  Conduct engineering studies for intersection traffic control, pedestrian crossing treatments, streetlighting, and safety improvements
  5.  Assist engineers in developing traffic engineering project plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  6.  Become familiar with design standards and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
  7.  Inspect work zone traffic control and infrastructure improvements for construction projects
  8.  Performs related work, as required
  9.  May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of current enrollment in a Civil Engineering, Environmental Design, or related college degree program.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team settings
  • Interest in gaining experience in traffic engineering and other general civil engineering practices
  • The lifting requirement is 30 pounds and includes working outside, setting up traffic data collection equipment, and collecting infrastructure data
  • This position will also require bending, twisting, kneeling, and walking on uneven surfaces

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with fundamental engineering principles
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to apply what is learned from written material to specific situations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and the members of the community
  • Ability to follow either verbal or written instructions
  • Skill in making technical computations and calculations using computer software
  • Skill in performing thorough work with attention to detail
