Boulder County Coroner's Department is seeking to hire a Coroner Technician - Family Assistance position. The Hourly Coroner Technician position is a support position primarily serving the Family Assistance Coordinator within the Family Assistance Unit. The Hourly Coroner Technician is responsible for providing support services and resources to those who have lost a loved one due to a sudden or unexpected death. The Hourly Coroner Technician is responsible for coordinating death investigation information and assists families in understanding the role of the coroner in the death of their loved one. This position also performs a variety of administrative and analytical duties.

Scope of Interpersonal Contacts:
The Hourly Coroner Technician is a representative of the Coroner's Office and is involved in a myriad of interpersonal contacts. Such contacts require a high degree of interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, tact, discretion, etiquette, and good judgment.

This is an hourly, non-benefited position.  This position will work varying hours Monday - Friday, 7:00 am -5:00 pm, 25-29 hours per week.  This position will work at 5610 Flatiron Parkway, Boulder, CO 80301.

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.


Hiring Salary Range: $24.04 hourly


Tentative Hiring Timeline:

  • Phone Screening: March 7th

  • First Round Interviews: March 12th

  • Language Proficiency Test: March 14th

  • Reference Check: March 14th



Complexity/Responsibility: 
  1. Engaging families of decedents that fall under the coroner's jurisdiction
  2. Case management and the day-to-day administrative duties of the Coroner's Office
  3. Pays strict attention to detail, be able to multi-task, and take initiative
  4. Able to work with a variety of sensitive and highly confidential material
  5. Organized, self-motivated, adaptable, detail oriented, and able to work under heightened emotional situations and unpleasant conditions while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.
  6. Performs related work, as required
  7. May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent and a minimum of 60 credits of higher education hours with a concentration in a human service field* from a nationally accredited college or university.

BACKGROUND CHECK & FINGERPRINTING:

  • A job offer is contingent on passing a background investigation with fingerprinting


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older

  • Must pass a drug screen and subject to random drug testing.

  • Must pass a polygraph examination.

  • Must be able to work weekdays.




PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with or for a coroner or medical examiner's office, or other related experience such as a mortuary, law enforcement, health care, mental health, social work, etc.
  • Experience working with bereaved families in the loss of a loved one
  • ABMDI certified death investigator or able to obtain certification within one year
  • Spanish bilingual skills
  • A minimum of three-months experience in an advocacy or closely related role. Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Adobe, PowerPoint

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of medico legal policy and procedures and Colorado Revised Statues pertaining to the coroner.
  • Knowledge of forensic investigation and interviewing techniques and practices, chain of custody, death certificate processes, and probable causes of death under a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Skill in providing comfort and assistance to those grieving a loss.
  • Skill in professionally and effectively engaging in difficult conversations and conflict resolution communicating in a clear and concise way when in stressful situations, when conversing with personnel, bereaved family members and stakeholders.
  • Skill in basic document preparation, formal report writing, and business letter writing.
  • Skill in written and verbal communication requiring information to be expressed in an understanding and empathetic way when working with bereaved family members and the public.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure and communicate and work effectively with County staff, bereaved families, law enforcement officials, pathologists, physicians, lawyers, emergency room personnel, and the general public.
  • Ability to function successfully in high stress situations and implement effective courses of action and draw appropriate conclusions.
  • Ability to use modern office equipment including computer equipment, and operate computer programs such as Microsoft Office 365, to include Microsoft Word, Access Database, Excel, 
  • Power Point and other software applications.
