POSITION SUMMARY:
The Gross Reservoir Hourly Seasonal Ranger performs public safety and enforces county resolutions in a highly visited recreational area known as the Gross Reservoir Management Area (GRRA). Works in a uniformed, unarmed capacity within the Operations Division of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. Patrols the GRRA by foot, boat, ATV, bike and vehicle. Contacts citizens and may educate, issue warnings, or citations for county ordinance violations. Provides initial emergency response to calls for service within the GRRA. Initiates and completes reports that document violations, incidents, or other calls for service. He/she may need to perform other duties as assigned by the Shift Commander, Division Chief, Undersheriff, or Sheriff. 1. Works a flexible schedule from approximately March 25th through November 29th (dates dependent on funding).
2. Works holidays, weekends, and special events.
3. Works in a recreational environment with a high degree of public contact.
4. Develops a working knowledge of the GRRA.
5. Patrols by foot, boat, ATV, bicycle, and vehicle to provide public assistance, encourage public safety, and public education.
6. Responds to emergency calls and renders aid.
7. Enforces Boulder County Ordinances within the GRRA.
8. Performs medical services to the level trained.
9. Recognizes situations requiring assistance from a Deputy Sheriff and makes the request in a timely manner.
10. Assists boaters, and other GRRA users who are in need of assistance.
11. Demonstrates proficiency in four-wheel drive vehicle, boat, bicycle, and ATV operations.
12. Takes responsibility for the cleanliness of Denver Water, and County vehicles and equipment.
13. Must be competent in basic first aid, and CPR.
14. Must be able to operate a multi-channel police radio.
15. Must maintain good physical condition.
16. Represents the Sheriff’s Office in a highly visible position.
U.S. Citizen, 21 years of age. High School Diploma or equivalent. College or additional education is preferred. Successfully pass a complete and thorough application and background investigation, drug screening test, and polygraph examination. Possess a current basic first aid and CPR certificate or be able to successfully complete a basic first aid and CPR course. The Seasonal Ranger should be able to articulate case facts in a succinct and clear fashion. Good verbal and written communication skills should be considered a priority. The Seasonal Ranger must be willing to demonstrate a decisive and independent attitude during efforts to initiate public contact and issue warnings or citations. This attitude should be tempered with acknowledgement of facts, behavior, and evidence at hand. The Seasonal Ranger must work within the accepted parameters of approved police practices, withstand the stresses of confrontation, and express an active interest in the performance of the duties as noted.

FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Vision - Dual vision is required. 20/20 minimum, natural or corrected, in both eyes and have minimum peripheral vision of 700 in both eyes. Constantly uses vision (day and night) to observe criminal and non-criminal activity as well as to drive motor vehicles. Constantly uses visual acuity to distinguish objects such as license plates and people at long distances. Constantly is required to differentiate and distinguish colors, shapes, distances, and sizes of objects, people, and animals. Frequently uses peripheral vision to observe and monitor multiple persons and activity.
2. Hearing - Dual hearing is required. When tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard. Constantly uses hearing to detect sounds of criminal and non-criminal behavior. Constantly uses hearing to distinguish sources and content of a wide variety of sounds. Constantly uses hearing to monitor and use a police radio, radiotelephone and standard telephone to communicate with the dispatch center, other officers and the public. Occasionally must be able to hear and understand a whispered voice from a distance of twenty feet. Occasionally must hear people verbally calling/yelling for assistance from a distance of one hundred feet.
3. Sense of Smell - Intact. Occasionally uses the olfactory sense to detect illegal use of drugs or chemicals. Occasionally uses the olfactory sense to detect and evaluate the presence of toxic or offensive vapors, smoke and fuels.
4. Speech - Must be able to speak and understand the English language. Constantly uses voice to communicate with other persons and dictate reports. Frequently verbally directs suspects, animals, and citizens what to do using a louder than normal speaking voice.
5. Body Movement
a. Back and Upper Body - Frequently lift from the ground to waist items weighing fifty pounds or more. Occasionally carry items weighing fifty pounds or more over fifty feet.
b. Hands and Arms - Frequently grasps, holds and restrains persons, animals. Frequently types on a keyboard and writes using writing tools such as pens, pencils and markers. Occasionally uses shovel, axe, and handsaw. Occasionally must block punches with arms and hands, strike with fists, and wrestle using handholds, arm holds, and body holds. Occasionally must use personal defense weapons such as a straight baton and pepper mace.
b. Legs and Lower Body - Constantly enters and exits vehicles, bicycles, ATV’s and boats in less than ten seconds. Occasionally must operate a vehicle with a manual transmission (clutch and gearshift). Frequently climbs hills and mountains. Frequently climbs stairs at a rate of one flight per ten seconds. Occasionally runs for short distances, while responding to calls. Occasionally climbs fences, walls, and ladders. Frequently walks in all types of weather and ground conditions. Occasionally stands for long periods of time in all types of weather conditions. Occasionally works in unusual positions, i.e., kneeling, crawling, lying down, sitting down, etc., for long periods of time.
