Job Summary: The Barista Substitute is responsible for providing support to the café during staff absences or busy periods. This role involves working alongside the Café Manager and other café staff to ensure the smooth operation of The Bookmark Café, and may require working the station alone during other employees' breaks. The Barista Substitute will perform various tasks, including preparing beverages, handling customer service, maintaining a clean environment, and assisting with inventory and stocking. Flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment are key aspects of this role.
This is a role with no fixed or guaranteed hours.
Essential Functions:
- Prepare and Serve Beverages: Make and serve coffee, tea, and other beverages according to established recipes and standards. (30%)
- Customer Service: Provide friendly and efficient service to all patrons, addressing their needs and inquiries with professionalism and courtesy. (30%)
- Cash Handling: Operate the point-of-sale system, process transactions accurately, and maintain a balanced cash drawer. (10%)
- Maintain Cleanliness: Ensure the café and surrounding areas are clean and well-organized, including cleaning tables, counters, equipment, and restocking supplies as needed. (20%)
- Follow Procedures: Adhere to established opening and closing procedures and health and safety guidelines to ensure a safe and efficient café environment. (20%)
Additional Responsibilities:
- Support Events: When needed, assist with the preparation and service of café products for library-sponsored events and public meetings.
- Collaborate with Team: Work closely with the Café Manager and other staff members to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience: 1 year of experience in a cafe setting. Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact positively with patrons.
- Skills: Basic knowledge of coffee preparation and café operations. Ability to handle cash transactions accurately and operate a point-of-sale system. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Flexibility to adapt to varying shifts and cover for absences on short notice. Strong time management skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Working Conditions:
Primarily physical work with repetitive handling of items, frequent walking and standing, and occasional lifting of items up to 40 pounds. Requires sufficient manual dexterity to permit the employee to operate restaurant equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which permit the employee to work in a multilevel facility. Seeing, hearing, and speaking are required.
